I'm tired of this thing whispering sweet nothings in my ear, keeps me up at night.

It's a Phase Linear 700 Series II thats been in storage for ten years. It's dusty and crusty and I'm afraid to plug it in!

Precautions I should take?

No doubt! I've got a couple of EVM12L guitar speakers that weigh a ton; the magnet structures are almost as big as the speaker basket.. 300 watts RMS power handling capacity. Loud as hell!

Look into making a dim bulb tester like Lee suggests. They're very simple. It'll save you from letting all the magic smoke out if there is a short or a failed component in the amplifier.
 
Dave, your avatar takes me back to a time when I had many favorites. Memorex reel to reel stuff, was it not? The lamp shade rockin' did it for me, what can I say.

I have no idea what a dim bulb tester is, but I think you guys may be poking fun at me. It would not take me long to figure out how to make a dim bulb violently explode. We all know a long fuse is easier to extinguish, so let's move on.

I plugged the PL in and lost a channel, no smoke. Had a comfy 8 load on each and what do I get? Mono amp. Could be worst.

And yes I checked the fuses and snugged up the cases with all that prenuptial crap.

Don't worry about it, there's only a couple guys around here that puffed me up. I applaud those fellas. Made me plug it in or be called girlie names around here. Hope you're HAPPY now, I got mono!!!!!!!!

Halogen bulbs can violently explode in certain conditions. This is because the halogen gas is under high pressure.

I use argon or krypton filled bulbs to make dim bulb testers. I prefer to connect a fuse in series for additional safety.

A dim bulb tester is just an incandescent light bulb connected in series with the unit being tested.
The incandescent light bulb acts as a constant current source, limiting fault current in the event of a short circuit and lights up to alert anyone nearby of a problem.

Dim bulb testers are also very useful for working on switched mode power supplies.

Al , we are not pulling your leg, we only do that after you've been here awhile and know what we are doing. Cassette Deck is right, a 100 watt incandescent light bulb in series with the power cord. Take a standard dual-duplex gang box, a porcelain light fixture and run power to a receptacle after going to the light bulb and back to the other side of the receptacle, the loght bulb as CD said limits CURRENT which is the killer.

And we only call your manhood into question in the cave, no rules there, well one rule...
 
Thanks, guys. I'll have to build a dim light tester. Should I make it permanent in my rack and have a power strip on it so I can plug all my amps into it?

Only when your not sure about them working or not. Nothing you want to run all the time...
