Picked up those today for just an euro. Good sounders, and a very long cable, useful for doing things in the room while listening to music on a late Friday night. :happy6:

These pair of K-240 Anniversary Edition Monitors are the best sounding (non modified) I've heard so far...

Kept it original, and all the new parts I've used are original AKG ones.
 
Very nice restification job done on those Anniversary Edition AKG K 240 headphones, Miles. And you liked how they sound more than some of your other headphones. Now, I'm curious.

Not exactly Nando, this one sounds remarkably different than all the other K240 MKI Monitors I've heard.
So probably this one is sounding different than the one you have, because I discovered it has different drivers in it.

From all eight AKG's I own this (heavily modified) one is still my favourite:

Miles: You are becoming quite skilled at rebuiding and modifying headphones, and you especially know your AKGs. That souped-up model of pair of AKGs should do as well as many of the higher priced models. Mind if I ask how much time and money it cost to modify them?

This "souped up" model betters the higher priced models Nando..... It will eat a 701 for breakfast.
Money issues are not important having in mind I still have a lot of new parts laying around, and it took me two and a half ours to fix the K240 Anniversary Edition.

I'm considering to do the same modification to this one as well:

That's the way to do it, Miles. And there's the satisfaction-factor of doing it yourself and having something uniquely better than the original. I follow the AKG model line-up and the price is getting up there for the professional model headphones. Their newest flagship is the K-812.

Yep, but most of their headphones are being manufuctured in China since a couple of years.
Check your MKII... Most likely there isn't the "Made In Austria" texture on it anymore.

You are right Miles, I really had to look hard to find the "Made In China" print. It was on the box which the headphones came in. But so far, I have been really pleased with the sound of the new K 240 MK II headphones. Some even say there's a burn-in time for these headphones and they sound better with more hours on them. I might have less than 20 hours on them.

Keep them playing for a week without wearing em..... :mrgreen:
 
Nah, it's more fun wearing them while recording than having them idling for that long. The only exception to that would have been in high school taking French dictee lessons via audio cassette. Who in Canada remembers doing that? I realize speakers have a break-in period, especially, after replacing speaker surrounds, but I didn't expect to break-in a pair of headphones.

I've got a vintage pair of AKGs at home, but they really seem to need something extra, I get pretty low levels plugging straight into the headphone jack. I've read a couple places where people have said they need a headphone amp as they aren't sensitive enough on their own. You guys with the AKGs using an amp? Any suggestions on something adequate but not expensive?

Dave: Which model of AKGs do you have? If they are the 600 ohm variety you might require a headphone amplifier. With most of my older gear, including cassette decks, the factory head amp within the component works fine.

They are an older version K240, pretty sure they are indeed of the 600 ohm variety. They are useable on some of my gear, but other pieces they play very quietly and I can tell a bit more juice is needed.
