All about Cans!

Awful? explain.

Must admit they aren't the best and the service from Sony certainly sucks when it comes to replacement parts like the earpads.

Awful, sure. Putting on Sony headphones is like hoisting a screaming brat on each shoulder. At least you can throw the Sony's on the floor and stomp on them. I've met guys at Head-Fi meets who loved them, but I can't stand them for more than a few seconds, cheap or expensive ones, and I can't explain why...:confused3:

I can: it's their soundsignature which isn't very pleasant. I've used some expensive ones: MDR-V 900 and MDR-V 7509 and got rid of them when I discovered there were better ones (non Sony's) for less money.

Perfect title!

This thread got me thinking about which albums/tracks do sound better through a decent set of cans.

One that springs to mind for me is this one.

And yes, I still own some vinyl!

Yes, this is a perfect title!

Most of the electronic orientated music is perfect for listening on a good pair of cans, but there are some favourites to me.

Without ANY doubt:

Haven't tried many different Sony cans but MDR-V6's are excellent. And they still produce them more than 2 decades later. Ear pads are easy to source too.
I use them whenever I record tapes because they don't hide anything. Are they "top notch" audiophile? Hardly. Now that I've owned Ultrasones for a few years, they are certainly more confining but that's what I like about them. Perfect for "close up" monitoring of what you're laying down on the oxide.
For mastering sessions? They rock!

Tiesto on cans comes to mind for me.
Spacious!

I had a pair of MDR-V6's briefly, but the dog chomped them. I disliked them so much, I didn't mind. It was a good thing they were only $1 at a flea market...

If said dog had chomped the Stax, there would have been hell to pay.

Nice pairing, Daren!

Nando.

I've had a listen to some "el cheapo" clones of this MDR-V6 /7506 a while ago and I must say:

These cans will wipe BOTH Sony versions from the table in any aspect, while costing just a fraction of what those Sony classics will cost.....

Thanks for sharing Miles! Never heard of Superlux.

To each his own. Especially when discussing sound. Way too subjective.

I forget what I paid for my original V6's but the secondary pair I purchased recently cost me about $50 on Amazon.
Nothing at the $50 price point comes close IMHO but again, it's way too subjective.

I totally agree to this Blaze, with creating this thread it wasn't my intention to have an endless discussion about the sound in the first place.
Indeed: such is way too subjective and a matter of taste in most cases.

Nevertheless there's enough left which is fun or useful to post in here.

I'm not sure if I am more jealous of that hunk of vinyl or that blank cassette.

Not really a headphone guy, any opinions on the Sennheiser HD 280 closed back phones?

And I used to have the Koss Pro-4aa's. I liked them a lot. Great bass response.
