If anyone knows how to use the sync function, please chime in...Robert???

It was from a radio station, that's all I know.

Everytime I get a new SM/O Jani puts it in a 3 ring binder and each page in those transparent "page savers".

She's a keeper!! That how this Fostex came and the Teac A-3340 too, fold out's, with user notes penciled in :thumbright: , complex machines, I can't really figure either out!

It's just cool to have a piece of radio history with the DJ's comments...I guess Tucson had RtR and vinyl spinnin' over the waves!!!

Re: Alan Parsons Project on TDK Gort reel, via the Fostex E-

Hi Stuwee,

That looks like a nice find...... Have not used a Fostek but it looks like the three track Teac/Tascam units used in broadcasting. There should be a L, R, and a sync or cue tracks. There should also be a mode selection switch for input, tape, and sync. One other set of buttons to look for are the track active (arm) , pressing those should arm the recorder for record mode. The usual play and record controls work as normal. Now that you have found the controls:

To select which track to record on press the related record track active button and then set the mode switch to what you want to record from. To make it work like a normal recorder do this:
1)Connect a source to input connectors.
2)Mode = Input
3)Adjust the input level controls.
4)Arm the track to record.
5)Press the record and play controls.
6)You should be recording.

To playback do this:
1)Connect the output connects to an amplifier
2)Mode = Tape
3)Adjust the output level controls.
4)Press the play control.
5)You should hear what was recorded.

To Overdub using sync:
1)Mode = sync
2)Arm the track you want to record the new material on.
3)Usually if you now press the record only button the arm light will blink. This is telling you that you are about to record on the track which is armed.
4)When you now press record and play the machine should be recording on the armed track and playing back the sync track.

This is easier to do than it is to explain........ One word of caution.... Keep the volume level of your playback very low until you get the hang of it. It is possible with some machines to get a feedback loop if you patch and press the buttons incorrectly. Not sure how the Fostek routing is arranged.

Enjoy,
Robert

Well Thank You Robert!! I have no idea what that is all about, I guess it means you can overlay mic inputs with the music...I just use it in 2-channel mode. And was curious what the sync stuff was.

It sure sounds good tho, even in 3 3/4isp

One use would be for recording commercial spots. One could add voice to background music and then edit the voice as needed, add sound effects, all recorded at different times. Sometimes the cue track also contains a timecode to sync it with other tape machines (SMPTE or something like that was one of the main timecode formats).

Yep, a very good find.... One additional note with it being a three track machine it likely won't produce tapes which can be played on standard recorders.

Enjoy,
Robert

Hehe, I'm just learning how this stuff works, it has a 'sync dump' button which I find very funny  :pottytrain4:  The OM is very confusing!

I just downloaded the OM.... It looks to be written for someone that already has an understanding of all this stuff. A rather crude manual, but it does have most of the required info though.

I wish you were down here to play with it with me :thumbright: , you seem to have an inate knowledge of this stuff. Personally I love to just pop a cassette in, but every once in a while those big reels come a callin'

Was your Alan Parsons recording an earlier one, or did have you Dale endure the whole process while you popped one off? He looks duly impressed. Nice Fostex, stuwee. Amazing what one can find if they have the slightest interest in these old work horses.

Father you can't say 'Popped one off' on a family forum  , Dale is a certified Alan Parsons Fiend!! No coaxing involved!! It was my first pressing 'Turn of a Friendly Card' Lp

For grins, we recorded the CD version to soften it up :flower: , I have to say it's a keeper! The tape is a TDK GX, he's off playing with a friend of ours, so it's turned off now

I'm fixin' to get the Onix warmed up!~!!

Have ya'll ever heard 'Freudiana"?? I have the original Russian CD from 1990, matrix code CDM 1099-350, with the bonus tracks :alien:

Stuwee: TDK GX series is wonderful open reel tape to use for recording. I bought another reel of TDK GX in 10.5" yesterday at Innovative Audio. Gordon has a special offer of 10.5" open reels at $10 each. Just the metal reel, alone fetches way more than that.

"Freudiana" is a new one to me.

Stuwee, I kinda grew up messing with this stuff. I had an early Teac multi-track before the 3340 class machines came out. Also played with the cassette multi-tracks and of course computer based systems when PC's became fast enough to do music. Lived on the bleeding edge of the PC stuff for several years. Went to the digital Portastudio machines when they were introduced (still have a Roland 8/16 track digital) Would like to get a 3340/3440 one of these days just cause.....

Lee: So what did you end up doing to the Onix?

Thanks,
Robert

Killer deal on those GX's, I think I paid $60 each for mine, worth every penny tho!

I'm sure you have to hear 'Freudinana', it was recorded for the Berlin Wall coming down, originally for the Iron Curtain market only, not for sale in the US, I got it from a Russian guy in 1992, a must have for Parsons fiends

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freudiana

I'd be happy to make copies for anyone... :D

Machined slots above the power supply, and added to the heatsink.
