Mine isn't cherry. Just hooked it up. It has awakened the system. I am hearing subtle sounds I haven't heard before with the Shanling and no preamp. What all did you do Lee? Very transparent. Same tone as the Shanling just more detailed. Very nice preamp. HMMM Just thought what the difference in the sound why I would get more detail sound. The only difference is the Tara Lab ICs going to the Preamp. Little more punch on the bottom end. Gotta say sounds pretty good.

I found the same results when I had my Denon pre in rotation. Made the same difference on tape vs going direct.

It has me wondering if the ICs I'm using from the CDP to the pre isn't the case. These Taras cost me 140.00. I'm starting to like them. I can get more at a demo price which is way cheaper. And still cost me a chunk of change. LOL

Well Larrt, we changed out some disc caps for some polypropylene and some polystyrene. And changed all op-amps to Burr-Brown OPA 2134's. Changed out the old GES 97's and 93's to Fairchild devices. I thought it sounded damn good myself.

I have to get this system out of here before I hook up the TT. Which means pulling things out of the living room. All my LPs are out there. My Sanus Euro lazy susan. and my office chair.

Nice thread Lee - this will be a great guide to follow when someone else works on one of these preamps.

I do have a couple of questions for you though.

When you deox the push button switches do you leave those on the mother board or will you remove them as you did with the rotating switches?

Could you photo document the volume switch deox for us - that one sounds like it could be a little tricky and one not to mess up.

Thanks - Dennis

I did, just didn't post it yet. Dennis I left the pushbuttons on because you can elevate the back so all the excess will drop straight down and off. the pb's dont need much manipulation , just 4 sqirts of D-100, actuate 50 times, the 1 second burst of D-5 and another 50 actuations then when they are done leave it hang to drip dry for 6-8 hours.

The Alps volume pot is not sealed as tight as some are. AND without thge loudness tap brought out there's a good size hole for the tube. This gets 4 squirts in this hole then move 2 tabs over ang give it 4 more.

Loosen the pot hold down screws till ya got 4 or so threads left in the nut. take a skinny screwdriver and crowd the slack to get more spray room. The same for the other wiper. Hold it together by hand while actuating. Retighten screws when you're done with the D-5.

Pots and selectpor back in. A tip-----solder just 2 tabs of each pot or switch, then align them to square with the board, each other and good ol terra firma, because they can, they will F&^% with you in all 3 axes.

And then my next 2 projects, a Spec 1 and Spec 2. Complete restorations on both.
