Larry, it's interesting that these vandersteens seem to agree with your approach to crosspoints. I remember you prefering tweeters crossed over at higher than the 2.5k/3k norm. And these are at 5k.

Can you explain why it would make difference where the X-over point is? If the speakers are matched and you have a good X-over. The freq.s would be covered.

Well, higher crosspoints effect off axis response. When the wavelength of sound becomes smaller then the diameter of the midrange, the sound tends to beam. But that's more of a theoretical rule of thumb. The final outcome is all that matters true enough.

I just find speaker design an interesting subject. The Vandersteens are a much more interesting design then a lot of other speakers. Even at full retail, with the time aligned drivers, first order slopes and full range to boot, they look like a bargain for the work that has gone into them.

Maybe there is something to be said for the criteria of what measurements are supposed to look like in that decision making process. Obviously there is no way to tell how a speaker sounds by looking at frequency response graphs.

Does madisound even make a really nice speaker/kit? Seems like they are all from somewhere or someone elses design. Not in house. Hmmm

I know they have kits. They use a a program I can't remember right at the moment to design X-overs though. To match all the drivers and every thing yes a lot of work on the Vandies. Did you go to there website? They have a tour of the plant. Pretty cool.

I've been reading all about the Vandies, looks like a cool company.

I know madisound has kits. But I don't think they actually designed any of them. Or maybe it was just the kits I was looking at. For example, Joe D'appolito did a bunch of work for Seas, and since they sell Seas at Madisound, they sell the kits.

I thought you said somewhere that madisound goes to low and you preferred just the opposite, like 5-6k. Oh well. Anyway, i just read a bunch about the 2ce and I have a local dealer. Turns out they don't have them displayed anymore and are special order only =/. I would have liked to take a listen.

Its unfortunate that they have no dealers in NH or MA either. I find it odd that such a notable speaker doesn't have a presence out here. But I guess it's becoming more common place as shops close doors.

Get in your car and come straight down I-95/ Take a right on I-81 drive about an hour and a 1/2 and you are there. Listen as long as you like. LOL
