A few prayers please for my Pa

Hey brothers and sisters, my Dad is going in for open heart surgery tomorrow, he's 75 and has had type II diabetes for over 30 years. Not a good combo for what he's having done. His specialist was against it and frankly so was most of the family including myself. He wants to to give it a go, so who are we to question??

I have guilty feelings about this, I don't want to lose my father...none of us would. I'm struggling with so many things about this right now. Obviously he wants a little more time but, at what cost? The Doc's say 4 hours on the table, then 2 days in ICU, then 4 days in the hospital for recovery....??? He's a Type II diabetic who is notorious for not maintaining his sugar levels. I know for a fact his levels have been at coma levels more times than he has fingers and toes over the last 10 years!! Every time you do that you take a massive toll on the body. I guess I just wish he didn't make a mistake having this surgery and makes a few more years with us!!

The older you get, the more you want to live. Cross your fingers and hope for the best man. My Dad had diabetes... can't think how many times as kids we brought him out of a diabetic coma. We were trained from an early age to recognize the signs. He would appear to be asleep but you could not rouse him, His breath had a fairly sweet odor and there was twitching in the extremities, especially the feet. Poured Coca Cola, orange juice etc... into him and he always recovered

Lost my Dad back in 1989... he was only 52. My Mom died 6 months later. I envy those who still have parents alive. Wish I could have done more things with my Dad before he passed but I was a dumbass kid who was more interested in my own world and then it was too late. Go tell your Dad you love him Bro
 
stuwee: Geri and I hope all goes well today for your dad's surgery and recovery. My dad, who is 87, had his aortic valve replaced on December 27th. He has acute COPD from smoking and silicosis from working in the mines. He quit smoking 14 months ago, after a 75 year run of smoking cigarettes. He wasn't able to have open-heart surgery because he would not have likely survived through general anesthetic, so the surgeons used another procedure (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) where the surgery was done via his femoral artery in his groin. The surgery took place on a Friday and he was out of the hospital by Sunday morning.

BTW I've been a Type II diabetic for 18 years.
 
Good luck to your dad Craig, tough surgery to undergo even under better health circumstances. We will say a prayer for him.
 
Thanks so very much for all the thoughts and prayers folks that means a lot!! I'm truely blessed to have this forum full of wonderful people !!

Pa pulled through the first stage (surgery) ok, there were a few issues, he's going to be in the hospital longer than he thought to recover. I'm not allowed to see him in ICU because I'm getting over the flu and that's a big no-no there. I promise to keep everyone posted on things and thanks again so very much ya'll !! I see some other guys here are having some health issues...my thoughts and prayers are with you as well. :love4:
