Your wife/partner has got to be part of the experience. The first time I lit up and took a run with Doug's Laart WOPL 1000, Geri liked it immediately. She didn't ask me to turn it up, but I did. It's when she asks you to turn it down you know you have relationship problems.

The only time Debbie asks that I turn it down is when she's on the phone or they have a henfest going in the kitchen when the Amazon female tribe arrives. Most of the time, she goes into the fathest back bedroom with the phone but with stuff rattling on the walls in there, she comes out and turns it down for me since I can't get my hand to respond when she asks. Her sister lives about a half mile away and she claims she can hear the stereo all the time

Not charged; but politely yelled to turn it down. They could hear it 2 blocks away. That was in a little town in AL. I didn't hear them knocking so they came in. Scared the crap out of me cop showing up right beside me. LOL

Has anyone else walked outside of their house within a one block radius to hear how loud your stereo might be for your neighbours? I was surprised how well the sound carried with open windows.

492, 493.. into 8 both loaded and driven....20-20,000hz, at less than 1% dist at full output..

Yep, back when I lived in Fonda, NY. Did three days back in 1984 (that was when my record collection was stolen)

In answer to Nando's collection... when I put the speakers on the back deck, my system can clearly be heard approximately 3 miles away across the lake. I call up my friends on Hemlock Point to verify

My neighbor next door thought he had the king of the neighborhood system but he readily admits he is beaten down. He uses powered Mirage speakers with his system and still can't hit the SPL's I hit daily. He has been bugging me to find him a 400 but he travels a lot so logistics are never good when I see a donor chassis for sale

About 12 or 13 years ago, My father, brother and myself were all charged for disturbing the peace. We lived out in the stix too. I think we had a hateful neighbor with nothing else to do. We thought we had a chance to have the charges dropped, my old man wouldnt stop arguing with the duty council. When she pulled out the phone book sized list of complaints I told him to drop it....were fucked. Each took 6 months probation and a 200 dollar fine. The judge made sure to be very clear that if we were to be seen in his court room again, on a noise complaint it wouldnt be so nice.

No fine for me, it was go directly to jail and do not collect $200. The judge (Wendell) gave me 7 days but I got out in 3

Frank was a good guy, he just brooked no nonsense and back then, people in jail meant money for the town (still seems to be the case). I just googled him and see that he passed away. He was alright, he was the same judge that married me to my first wife LOL

The 1801 and the elites are a serious combination. Plenty of power and horns to eat it up. These speakers can be heard for very long distances as they were designed for large room and open space applications.

The neighbors have given up. I'm in the basement, but in the summer it gets loud outside .The cops used to drive up and start with "Mr. Laatsch, could you please", now it's a slow drive by and a" Hey Lee, you know"

Joe: That was a great write-up on the loaner 700B. I find it difficult to get into superlatives when describing nuances of amplifiers, but I do know there are a few basic pluses I listen for when I'm demoing an amplifier. If you select music you are really attuned to and play often enough with other amplifiers, you can pick up the differences more easily. Most of my listening time is spent in the 11 o'clock zone and less on my preamp control. The bass, and especially playing some good jazz featuring double-bass instruments, can reveal the difference between a capable amp and one that doesn't have the reserve to allow you to feel good bass. I love to play a lot of acoustical pieces featuring guitar and piano. I want the clarity a good amp brings to those instruments. And I turn down the lights during an evening session to get the full sensation. Somehow, an afternoon session in daylight doesn't do it for me. And the amplifier has got to look the part - if it doesn't look attractive as part of my stereo system, or doesn't have that testosterone-inducing aura I don't think I would buy it in the first place.

Thanks Nando. I don't have a bunch of things laying around to test vs, but sometimes the differences are obvious, like in this case. I'm personally more interested in quality vs quantity and typically listen to levels that are more on par with what bobbysdad stated. I have found that over the years, reviewing takes a bit longer for me, since I prefer to "live with" the product for awhile. That way I can listen at any time of day or conditions. Sometimes I'll listen actively, but then other times I'll listen more passively and see if something grabs my attention. I also think that it's important that a piece of gear can be more informative, without altering tonal characteristics in order to judge fidelity. That's a much more difficult task with loudspeaker comparisons, because they are so tonally different. A matter of taste and fidelity are different things, but two sides of the same coin.

In the looks department, I'm a sucker for analog meters...

Ben, I still have an uglyass pair of Altec Voice of the Theater's that I might drive out an pickup someday, I used them for my band PA back in the 80s and they are stored at my sister's house in Mayfield, NY. I think the 400s would have fun driving them. I already know what Debbie will say... "there's NO way those uglyass huge speakers are going in my livingroom". They would be tough to get into a minivan anyway unless I took 4 seats out
