D6 should be tested with everything off and dmm in diode test mode. Before that measure the ac at whatever input you are using. This is the disadvantage is of not having a scope. Your guessing at what the output really is.

AC at the inputs I used was .360 volts AC at the left and .362 volts at the right,

Power off, inputs disconnected, DMM in diode mode, the marked anode end D6 read OL. At the unmarked end, the DMM initially read a little below 1 volt then stabilized at OL. This was repeated several times.

For what it's worth, a director of an antique radio museum I'm a member of said he'd try coming up with a basic scope for me with a tutorial. Too bad he hasn't come through yet.

No, I forgot about just checking the diode. It read .516.
Please say no, but does it need to be checked out of circuit? I'm concerned about damaging those traces.

I'm going to get out of your hair with this thing. There is a tech I've had a few dealings with on things reel to reel. He works full time at it and his garage/shop is large and well equipped.
Rather than me trying to hunt and peck at diagnosing and repair with no equipment, no knowledge, no facility, eyesight that's been better and a fear of damaging delicate traces, I'll turn that chore over to someone else.

Gary...that's a unit I have restored. Box it up and I'll email a shipping label and I'll fix it. I feel obligated to find the problem. Plus I want to know what is wrong. I am very familiar with that unit .

I'll do that but was reluctant to ask.
a) because I don't want to impose and
b) because incase it's something blatantly, foolishly, obviously simple I don't want to look like an idiot. Reality not withstanding.

Two years ago, those cheesy fibre jack pack strips broke apart on a Hafler DH101 preamp. I had new stainless steel strips made in a machine shop and populated it with 24 gold plated jacks. For the life of me, I could not figure out why it was not passing any signal. I shelved it for a year in frustration and when I finally decided to look at it again, I immediately saw that the processor loop jumpers weren't in. Another time, it cost $200 to get my motorcycle to start because I knocked a plug wire out of the coil when I waxed the tank. I can overlook some pretty stupid stuff but like to keep my foobars to myself.

If you send that label, I'll get the preamp off to you next week.

And thanks!

I've had my share of "idiot" moments and will likely have more.....keeps the humor going around here. I believe it's something simple and I really want to know if it's something I have fixed before and if not why I missed it the first time..

I need dimensions and a weight for the box. The Sumas address I'm guessing??

Coincidently I have a box 22" X 14" X 8".

Specs say weight of the preamp is 11.5 lbs so total weight maybe 18 lbs.? And yes, the Sumas address. For convenience, its Gary Wilson - 115 Garfield Street 20848 - Sumas, WA - 9829

Gary, I took the liberty to edit your e-mail address out of your post. You would be spammed to death...

BTW and probably don't need to mention, but that zip code should read 98295.
