They are often wound with very fine wire Jim. The heating-cooling cycles causes expansion and contraction that can lead to a coil wire opening. That seldom happens in large power motors because of large gauge wire, but sometimes occurs in fractional HP motors with delicate windings.

Is that the anti-skate mechanism for the arm? Isn't it a dust collector over time?

You wrote that you had issues making the wires fit and clearing the meters. If moving the bridge around now made it all fit, you will be fine. Not as intended or as neat as it could be but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yes, the hold down plate should almost touch the left side wall when installed correctly

The wires are all formable to be able to fit in the available space. Many have accomplished that. There is a notch in the hold down plate, when oriented properly will clear the meter nut. The threaded rod should be threaded down, by hand, until you feel it bottom on the transformer windings...
