    Not So Sure

Buy some wool felt at a fabric store and cut out little rings slightly larger than the dome diameter. Tack them on with rubber cement and play the harsh stuff. Diffraction effects often sound harsh.

    Found 'Em

Or go to Goodwill and buy a couple of wool sweaters. I love to stuff ports with wool.

Isolated Variable Transformers? Or Separate Iso and Variac? Plus a Newbie Tech Question

I recommend an isolated variac. You never know when someone has miswired an AC plug. The isolation protects your 'scope. If you want, you can isolate the scope and not the variac. I have a used Sencore PR57for sale for $250. nakdoc77@gmail.com

    Nakamichi T100 (not the software)

Very very stable. The input buffer opamp always fails, and those display caps, but the only other real failure I've seen was a broken lead on the suspended 3kHz oscillator "crystal" mechanical resonator. If the T100 has not been used much, the two range lever switches are tough to clean by...

In Appreciation For The Lowly 482Z

The classic is worth a listen simply because the W&F is really low. It opens your ears to what a tape can sound like. Also, the tri-tracer mech.anism 700/1000 is super in that respect.

    Tech Recs

The 100 count is just customer units. I guess we techs have a huge advantage over customers because we can make them wait. A couple years ago I had a really impatient and pushy NYer who wanted hi Nak dragon repaired ahead of the others. I acquiesced, but it seemed unfair. He did pay more...

    Hi from Chris Cables

Ah, I just refered your to "what's his name who is now working from home" in another thread. Is it legal to change your avatar name?

Nak 550. Stay away or come and play?

550 motors are fine. That deck cover is super sexy...never knew one was available. Nakamichi CM300 and C700 mikes are super, the CM100 not so much. The big concern is the reel idler. Originals were a single bearing with a plastic body, which wore out in a few years causing flutter. We replaced...

WOW & FLUFFER gauge. Feel like I need one of those in my toolbox :D

Hey, you guys spend too much time raving about Phase Linear trees. I do like the funny pictures here tho.

    Tech Recs

Oh, I am in a friend's basement and still have stuff to sell! The blowout sales were in our parking lot. The first weekend we sold 11k worth of stuff. I took most of my "treasure" to the basement. I am just about finished with a Quad 33/303 set...anyone interested? I've got a rough PL200 and...

    Tech Recs

I've partially retired, and jack diesd about 3 months ago. My problem is when I closed my shop, I had 100 units I promised folks I'd repair. I'm down to 33, and hope to finish them by Christmas. To reach this goal, I've tried like crazy not to take in new repairs. Some of the discipline stuff...

Any Experiences with Gennlab Test Tapes? Need Guidance from Seasoned Techs

As long as your goal is semi-pro level repairs, any of the 3 "test tape" producers are fine. Typically they record tapes on a dragon, but a better choice is a deck with manual record head azimuth so you can compensate for cassette shel differences. There are 3 tapes you need (or one tape with...

    Nakamichi T100 (not the software)

I'm an expert on these...somehow I missed your TH post. Basically, if you can plug it in and see the first bargraph segment lit up, the T100 can be restored. A dead display is not a deal breaker though, two hi voltage caps in the display's little piggy back board are the first ones to fail...

In Appreciation For The Lowly 482Z

Good to hear your review Bob. I've heard certain Nak decks sound magical, the most common being the LX-5. The classic transport decks outperform the Sankyo mech decks (take that all you Cr-7 lusting audiophools) . A 482 is simply equipped with fewer gizmos, but otherwise it is a ZX-7. I just...

Phase Liner 4000 volume/tone knob needed

It does look like the same knob. Thanks for pointing that out. I might also steal on off a 1000 and put something non-original in its place. I made the typo not on purpose. For years service guys have always called them Flame Linears, but the last 4four 400s I've encountered have all worked...

    Dahlquists After 40 Years

I owned DQ-10s for many years. What you are hearing are the benefits of "No Box". If you think the speaker is bass shy, try sitting them on the floor (or even on the tiny feet) Bass in spades. The optional stands were almost universal and they are responsible for a more accurate bass with no...

NAK System... Never seen one of these

The 620 power amp is a cool design. THD is rated at 0.005% too. You could fit 2 amps in the rack and bridge them using a Nakamichi "black box" bridging adaptor.

PL Similar to Dynaco - Is The Transformer The Real Basis For WOPL Rebuilds?

I've often shared my views about vintage equipment and the sounds they make. Taking an old unit and replacing caps always seems to bring joy, but who really knows if the original OEM sound was better? We don't have new old stock stored in a freezer to compare. As an example, I will offer the...
