A First Look At The New Tape From ATR

A quick update on the MDS-36 tape I ran tests on in February 2016. My initial findings were outstanding but there are a couple negative issues I have encountered. This tape is thin and seems thinner than a long play version of Ampex/Quantegy 400 series. Perhaps this is directly or indirectly...

    Something's Gonna Happen

Since I've known about the ATR long play tape for about a year I assumed the big announcement was that Maxell had reconsidered or perhaps a new production deck.

    Marantz SD 3000

I had a SD 3020 for a while and it was great. I loved the 2 speed nature of it. I rebelted it and it was perfect. But I opened it up one day to adjust the balance VR's and slipped with the screwdriver and blew the whole thing up. I eventually sold it as a parts deck. I wonder if it ever ran...

Trying Out Some PYRAL LPR-35 Tape

I have a reel of Scotch Classic from 1980. I haven;t had it out in ages but is it thinner than say 407? When I handle the long playing tapes they feel especially thin and delicate because I've been using so much ATR. The bit of LPR-35 I have from 2011 feels like 407. Maybe a good micrometer...

A Good Day For A Scotch And A Coke

The Q 457 is rock solid. I played one of the mix's I made on them and the still shine . A very high quality product they were making.

A Good Day For A Scotch And A Coke

Essentially all of my early and middle period Ampex 400 series and the 356 and 357 Grand Master. Scotch 996 was hinting at being grabby but the 806 was full blown SSS. The 356 and 357 were the worst although they're no older than most of the 400 I have. The late Ampex and Quantegy is rock...

The Official Reel To Reel 'Porn" Thread

The A2300SD I've owned from new. The TR-3000 I just got, it's essentially a NOS machine. The Revox A77 I've had since 2013 and it's awaiting a full electronic component rebuild.

A Good Day For A Scotch And A Coke

The past two weeks haven't been good ones for my older back coated tapes. Virtually every reel I treated with the NuFinish system (the one I refined from the original) has gone sticky again. Now it's been 2 years since I treated most so a touch up is not unreasonable to expect. However it's a...

Trying Out Some PYRAL LPR-35 Tape

I have the sense from Des's report that the new LPR 35 is perhaps thinner than previous versions. I would be cheaper to use thinner tape stock as it's overall less material going into the product. I've only been using ATR for the past 2 years and everything tends to feel thin in comparison...

    Something's Gonna Happen

It can mean only one of 3 things. New decks are on the way, ATR has finally made a long play tape. or the real kicker...Maxell has re entered the RTR tape market. Should be interesting to follow!
