    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

I agree its very handy.... It took me months to figure out how to do it and it was by accident that I found out how to do it.

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

Oh yeah 10+ volts out pretty easily. It is pretty common to see 6dB or more per octave increase in the crosstalk numbers. Here's what the Audio Critic had to say about crosstalk in their design review and measurements of the Acurus L10, "Careful use of ground planes prevents crosstalk...

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

So you're probably wondering what the performance of the unit looks like after the upgrade work, so here you go. In the first two charts the white lines are the copied traces from the previous (pre upgrade) graphs I posted. Unfortunately the APWIN software doesn't let me color those lines...

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

Finishing up with the upgrade work. First picture is of the unit with most parts to be replaced removed from the board. The old and new transformers are sitting on the left. Next is the completed unit, current sources are there but hard to see. This is a closeup of the two channels...

Ahhh so you're a cart man too....

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

Nah the D/A input is just another analog input, same as the CD, Phono, etc. The Acurus is a very basic no frills preamp. What they did do well was including good quality parts and design into such a low cost package. The upgrades I perform are to correct the shortcomings that were done to cut...

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

And the test cart... :) I bought the wire cart a couple of years back at a local hardware store that was closing. I never realized just how handy it would turn out to be. I know it doesn't look like it but it's amazingly sturdy.

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

I stripped down the LS11 this morning and swapped out the bad 10 pF mica cap with the new 15pF that I had in my parts bin. I included a picture of the nude LS11 in my testing cubby hole. I used to do most of this stuff on a workbench in my garage but its miserable out there in the summer. Now I...

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

Northwinds, I have 5 pre's here in the house now so I understand what you mean by not needing another. Unfortunately I keep looking for deals though. I think its an illness at this point. o_O I had an RL-11 show up locally on CL a few months back, mint condition, original owner, included...

    Upgrading the Acurus Pre

Last month Lee contacted me and inquired about upgrading an Acurus LS11 that he had. Because there are others on the forums here that use the Acurus pre's we thought that we'd make a thread out of it for others to watch and ask questions along the way. Lee's LS11 arrived yesterday so away we...

    pl400 ground loops and hum

I just mentioned the spike event in reference to your dropped washer example. I think we're all on the same page as far as our desire to build quality electronics. However no matter how bulletproof and perfect as we think they are there can still be faults lurking. It might take hundreds of...

    pl400 ground loops and hum

I was worried that the aleph schematic might throw a wrench into my explanation with the two thermistors being shown . But after thinking about it I realized it also highlights the two different uses for them. In your failure scenario within a few secs of the fault current beginning...

    pl400 ground loops and hum

I think that I confused the point I was trying to make by using the term "inrush" protection. I wasn't talking about inrush protection. I was specifically talking about using an NTC thermistor in place of the resistor you're using to isolate the star ground and chassis ground planes. This is not...

    pl400 ground loops and hum

A 2.2 ohm resistor is a bit light for separation of the star & chassis ground's. I would shoot for 10 ohms or so. Also a resistor is not a good choice in this location in an amplifier, a preamp would probably be fine. I know a lot of manufacturers have used resistors for this in the past however...

Carver Silver 7T Pair Mono Block

I knew they were pricey but I never asked what he spent on 'em. I know he waited a long time for them. He had wanted me to do some work on one of them for him, but I was too worried I'd scratch it or worse drop it. According to what Bob told him they need to be sat on their sides to work on them...

Carver Silver 7T Pair Mono Block

I don't know about the 7T but one of my customers had a pair of Silver 7 Obsession amps built, 900W rms 1800W peak. They were hand built by Carver himself. He is driving a new pair of Carver ALS 's with them. I have yet to hear them, he lives in Houston and has invited me to stop by sometime...

    Audio Precision ATS Discussions

Actually the Sys platforms predate the ATS, my unit was built in 1990 and production of them started back in 1985. APWIN was a late addition for the SYS1, they were operated via DOS in the early days using a program called S1. What I meant to say in my earlier post when I said the output should...

USB port? That just means its too new to be valuable to the Smithsonian.... Some low rank electronics museum might take it in though. :)

Yep, actually I had an A250 that I received today on the bench, but my saved 8ohm power test is that A150 test.

    Audio Precision ATS Discussions

I've never fed a square wave into mine so you had me wondering. I set up a 2 Vpp 1kHz square wave on my scope from the func gen and then fed it via unbalanced BNC to the AP. It measured as expected,,, 2V.
