    PL 200 Help Please!

bobdod, I have resisted posting for as long as I could. Unfortunately, the Phase Linear 200 series 1 amplifier is the worst/most unreliable amplifier Phase Linear ever made. I say this for many reasons. I will not list them all here. I hope you don't intend on using this amplifier to drive...

Tall order, sounds like a pain

If my memory serves me correct.......... Most Phase Linear series two consumer products had a front panel with rounded corners. As an option, they were available with a "rack front panel" which had square corners. I am not sure if they had to be ordered with the optional rack front panel at the...

WOPL 700B Has more output on the left channel.

"Ruth" is more than likely Ruth Anderson. The only Ruth I know of that worked at Phase Linear. If the output stage has been replaced with White Oak Audio backplane boards then you might consider removing the sticker since there are no longer any traces of the work that she did.

    phase linear parts

Phase Linear had (2) silk-screened versions of their 700B front panels. The 1st version had the meter range switch lettering arranged -20dB on the left side and 0dB on the right side. The 2nd version had the meter range switch (reversed) -0dB on the left side and -20dB on the right side. (see...

    First PL-400 Restoration

If my memory serves me correct the caps you had in the photo were made by Temple(?) If so, I hope you replaced them. They had a very high failure rate.

    WOPL update for PL400

There was a "meter service bulletin" issued on this very subject. For a Phase Linear 400 series 1 amp, 0 VU corresponded to 50 watts or -6dB. NOTE: This was different for the 700B. I also started a thread on the very subject of analog style VU meter calibration a while ago. Ed

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Mark, Ken Cox was the purchasing agent at Phase Linear. In the earlier days at Phase Linear Ken ran the stores. With perhaps the exception of some early 400 series 1 amplifiers that used Midland meters (I will have to double-check on this), the bezels used on the Phase Linear 400 and 700B...

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Joe, It all makes sense. I am not sure how effective the aluminum "hum shield" was as a ground bus. There was also a small jumper wife between the ground terminals. I will take some measurements once my wife gets off my back on selling the other mechanical/physical measurement and test...

PL 700 II Clair Bros Rising from the Ashes

Joe, I mentioned to Lee a while back that at some point I would test an original 700 with and without the aluminum "hum shield". (I haven't had the time to do that yet.) Dean didn't seem to think the hum shield had any effect. However he didn't back it up with any data. Bob Carver must have...

Phase Linear 700 a real purple face?

I'm the one who bought the purple Heil Sound 700. Even rarer than Clair Brothers or Audio Analysts which came later.

    Status of Dean

I think you mean Dean Nissen? If so, Dean was the last factory Phase Linear service manager at their Lynnwood Washington location. Dean and I shared a Phase Linear web site for many years on AOL until October 31, 2008. A link to an archived copy of it should appear below this message. NOTE...

PL 700 solder point pulled away from control board

If you have the original output transistors or power supply capacitors they will have 4 digit date codes on them that will give you a relative idea when the amplifier was built. Usually a few months after the transistor or capacitor indicates.
