    With the variac all the way down and off, hook the speakers up and clip the DMM on the binding posts too. Then bring the variac up and see what the offset does as you turn up the variac, Should only take a few seconds to see what is happening.

    Did you wire in the bias transistors correctly? With both channels acting up the same way, I would go there first.

    Are any of the transistors you removed shorted Collector to Emitter? Did you check them while they were out?

    Well you found it then, You have a screw to chassis short going on under the right channel heatsink assembly. Time to take it off and find some broken sockets underneath it...

    Possibly a shorted to chassis transistor case in column 1 or 3 where column 1 is near the transformer.
