    PL7000S2

Been reading about flux loops and injecting signal directly at the head without using a tape, so I'm trying this. I want to inject signal for frequency response sweeps through the heads with a signal generator and see the response on the QA-403 audio analyzer. The ferrite heads on these old...

    PL7000S2

Yeah man, some of the guys on TH take years rebuilding tape decks. Luckily I'm retired and have more time to throw at it.

    PL7000S2

Unit has 30 alignment trimmers. Some are used as a single variable resistors, others are used as voltage dividers. Originals are Alps sealed. Could probably have made them work, but I want the unit to hold alignment with no issues for decades. New Bournes sealed Cermet trimmers were installed...

Any Experiences with Gennlab Test Tapes? Need Guidance from Seasoned Techs

Thom, I hear you. I suspect that if one has decent experience with the test equipment, then aligning a deck really isn't that hard.

    Calibrating a deck recording

The Phase Linear deck service manual lists three Pioneer and one Sony blank tapes needed to perform a complete calibration of the recording section. I won't be using those specific blanks. I'll use the cheap, used 80's TDK tapes I pick up locally, and internally calibrate the deck to those four...

And, my deck is based on the old Phillips 160 nwb/n standard. I'll test Dolby level at the chip rather than follow the service manual. Supposed to be more accurate. Not sure if the VU meters have a Dolby marking or not. They also get adjusted Here's a good site explaining more about levels...

Any Experiences with Gennlab Test Tapes? Need Guidance from Seasoned Techs

Here's another good thread to help understand this. A bonus is in the threads last post, a link to a awesome graph done by Vince, who is a member here. https://www.tapeheads.net/threads/seeking-for-help-to-convert-nwb-m-into-db-for-different-standards.91350/

Any Experiences with Gennlab Test Tapes? Need Guidance from Seasoned Techs

As am I. I'm currently rebuilding a Phase Linear 7000 Series 2 deck and the specified test tapes the service manual calls for have different specs than the Hanspeter Roth tapes I have. So, I found this thread and printed it out. Good info about test tapes beginning around post #9. Using the HPR...

    PL7000S2

Read a post on TH where the fellow used a hard drive platter in a mirror cassette. Works excellent. Appears to be a first order mirror. Platters are aluminum, so easy to cut and file. I'll make a few more as time allows out of various other brand cassettes.
