White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

The WOA-1000C Boards. The designation comes from the original name of the amplifier "The White Oak Audio 1000 Custom". That has been changed to the WOA Model ONE, but the silkscreen on the board has not been updated yet. I call these the Dual Mono Amplifier Boards. The two of them are equivalent...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

Phase Linear 700 amplifiers with 960VA transformers were designed back when 15 Amp grounded breakers in a home wiring circuit were considered novel. I believe a 20 Amp-rated appliance requires certain NEMA plugs and certifications (unless you build it yourself, ha, ha,ha)

I did not say anything about the copper plate where the RCA Inputs come into the amp. I was speaking of the Copper Plate that goes between the Power Supply Capacitors. George had the RCA Input Jacks wired properly. I was pointing out that he did not need to Ground the Input Jack Copper Plate to...

Lee, I think you had one with the hottest transformer. How hot was THAT one? Also, clipping is subjective. Most people cannot detect a good percentage of clipping distortion at high Sound Pressure Levels, even though it is obvious on a scope. I believe the RMS voltage does go up a little bit...

    PL 700 Pro Build

George, as a possible alternative, the RCA Grounds on the Copper Plate are not necessary. The Input wire shields receive their Ground potential from the Control Board on Positions 2L and 2R. There is much more noise around the Main Power Supply Capacitors that you do not need. Additionally, you...

    Another Newbie

You are on the slippery slope my friend. However, you are in excellent company. It seems blowing fuses is the price of admission to this Forum. You may have one (or two) bad capacitors in your Power Supply; that will toast a Line fuse. The WOA Capacitor upgrade will cure that.

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

Here is the Output Relay Board. It went together so well I forgot to take assembly interval pictures. It is fairly uncomplicated but uses off-board regulated power. The amplifier outputs are brought in on 1/4" Faston Tabs and the copper layer for the output audio signal is huge. Next are the...

Eric, I do the same type of Heat Sink prep, I also chamfer the holes in the chassis, it makes it easier for the Nylon shouldered spacers to go in the punched holes. I must say the alignment of the Chassis and Heat Sinks in the WOA Model ONE is perfect. I have an old set of Vermont Gage, pin...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

Which horse are you talking about? I don't know about that, but I do know that 2000VA at 120V will pull 16.66 Amps. Most home wiring breakers are 15 Amps. They would be getting warm if there are other loads on that Outlet circuit. And the label on the back of the Phase Linear 700B's that I have...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

The Power Control PCB Assembly. First the Resistors... Next are the smaller parts. Finally, the larger pieces. Notice the "Vacation" Switch? It removes all power from the amplifier, no standby power. That's why this is the "Brains" of the WOA Model ONE. Next up will be the Output Relay...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

Joe and I had this meter discussion. Part of it was technical, but in the end we agreed that we both liked to watch big swinging analog meters. Turns out that LED meters would have been much easier and cheaper to engineer and design in-house. But to go with custom analog meters, Joe had to go...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

I believe the difference in the Power Supplies is that the PL700 used a 1000VA Transformer, the WOA Model ONE will use a 1500VA Transformer, a 50% increase in Wattage (assuming a Power Factor of 1). Additionally, the Phase Linear transformers were I-E Steel Cores and the Mode ONE transformer is...

PL400 glad I found this forum.

Interesting... I found the item on ebay. It is a DC to DC Converter 5V-30V. So, the voltage going to the Meter Lamps in a PL400 is 6VAC. And the LEDs you used need DC. You used a DC to DC Converter as an AC to DC Converter. And as a bonus, it is adjustable so you can change the illumination of...

PL400 glad I found this forum.

Gary, it is unlikely that Phase Linear used a three-prong plug on an amplifier back in 1973, but there are people on this Forum that would know. More likely it was an upgrade made by a previous owner, possibly to use as a stage or studio amplifier. Most stage electricians and all studio...

White Oak Audio Design - Model ONE 1000 Watt Stereo Amplifier

Here are the progressive build pictures of the first of two Rev D Meter PCBs. I think we have these wrung out now. There are 14 LEDs for each meter. Because Joe pre-bent them, they can only be install with the proper polarity. I found that these LEDs fit the holes very well. By soldering the...
