    Calibrating a deck recording

Nakamichi tapes were TDK, but allegedly it were taken from the middle of the pancake to have better "quality", as they said. Even though Maxell were the hghest domestic selling tape back then, almost every brand of cassette deck manufacturers used TDK as their reference.

    Cassette lovers; why?

As Nando, I have been using tape media since very young. To be honest; I have never stopped using tape: open reel, cassette and even DAT. I stopped using DAT years ago, but my cassette and open reel decks are fully working and some were fully restored. For those who have the opportunity to own a...

Crown Macro Reference Monster amp rework.

Sorry for the late reply, Perry, but I have never inquirie for this amp schematics. If that a foil related issue, then, that explains it. All Revox B 200's series has the same problem, like my B 215S and B 226.

Crown Macro Reference Monster amp rework.

Hello Perry. I don't have any PIP card in it. Just as it came from the seller. I have a dedicated 30amp breaker for it. Just realized yesterday that the "Macro Reference" sign is off! Is that a lamp needed? I have 7 Crown Amps here: D 150, DC 300 and the monster. Used to have more Crown stuff...

Crown Macro Reference Monster amp rework.

The Crown Reference Amps were introduced in the mid 90's and I was in New York at the AES convention when they exhibited it. It's a monster amplifier and comes in 2 versions: Studio and Macro. It has been my main amp for over 10 years now. It broke down once due to electricity problems at home...

    What cassette deck ?

The heads situation...we always wondered how a B 215 could sound with a Nakamichi head...just think about it. He, he,he. Anyway, the Canon heads of the B 215 could be replaced by some Sony heads with some mods, of course, and it was done by Alex at some time. He always complained about the...

    What cassette deck ?

Yep, 1/2" @ 30ips were the defacto standard mixdown format back in the 90's . Most of our customers came in with 1/2" masters for Mastering. The others usually brought DAT's. I used a Studer A 80 1/2" in my Mastering suite. The Otari you see above has the 1/2" conversion kit but I have not used...

    What cassette deck ?

Well, you already know me and I use all my decks . Those that I don't use, I rather sell it as I'm not a museum keeper. I keep a "practical" collection where all the pieces must work perfectly, and installed in a working system. All my decks, hardly 10 cassette decks and 10 open reel, are...

    What cassette deck ?

Yes, you are right concerning the Revox, still one of the best ever made. As for Nakamichi goes, you know, this is highly subjective and up to the end users preference. But, again, no one can deny the importance of that specific brand in the cassette recording history. I like it all. Regards.

Open-Reel Tape Experiences -The Good & Bad

My preferred tape is the 911, but all the actual manufactured tapes are very good as well. For long play I use LPR 90 or ATR MDS. Similar settings. Regards.

Perreaux SM2 preamp - any opinion?

In 1985, Perreaux was introducing their gear in the US through Signet distributors and then Singer after a while. My first High End gear were Perreaux: PMF 1150B and the SM-2. Their Amps were impossible to kill, even after long years of use and I have had some, including the big 3150. The...
