I emailed him after my post here. Thinking I can swap out the backplane boards on my Valerie (full comp WOPL 400) to resolve the static issue, send out or rework that set to pair with a new control board and new output transistors into the stock PL400 that is currently passing DC. Should end...

I just wish I had the time and patience to do it myself, but apparently I don't. My incoming projects pile is FAR exceeding my completed pile. Really frustrating when items in my completed pile revert back to my incoming projects.

In other news, I'm getting static on my right channel again on Valerie (full comp WOPL 400). It happened about a year ago and I was able to clear it up by touching up the solder joints on the backplane board. It was performing flawlessly ever since until last night. Listening at moderate...

Umm... Donald Regan?? Is that a real person?

Nope, I haven't touched it. Two kids, a 50 hour per week job, and a fiancee that likes attention take up most of my time. She's headed back to Georgia to visit her family next weekend. I'll have to carve out a few hours to back those outputs out while she's gone. I was just planning on doing the...

Now we're getting somewhere. Replaced the fuse, started to bring up slowly on the Variac. Didn't get very far and saw the VU meters pop up to -1 and flutter and got a bright dbt bulb. Shut her back down before the fuse blew. My hypothesis? Something is definitely wrong. :-)

Honestly, I didn't get that far. I only checked the terminals on the DC protect board, confirmed the proper AC and DC supply voltages, found the +38v offset and stopped. I did just realize that I have a blown AGX-5 line fuse. Not sure if that is a cause or symptom.

No luck. Removed the Variac, plugged the DBT straight into a surge protector power strip and got the exact same results - 38vdc at both of the output terminals.

Another item that I didn't think was worth mentioning is that when I flipped the control board over to install the DCP ground and DC wires to the backplane network I broke the white/green wire off of the right channel right at the control board terminal. I stripped and resoldered it and didn't...

Yep. I actually had to turn off the overhead light over my workspace just to insure that it was coming on at all as I was increasing the Variac voltage. It was a super soft orange glow that faded after each increment of the dial. Normal startup. I was shocked that the relay didn't click.

Yeah? That sounds odd, but I don't appear to have any shorts, so I shouldn't need to sneak up on it. I could try that tonight.

Anyone got time to help me troubleshoot a stock(ish) PL400 issue? I picked up an 8-fin 400 on ebay for $250. Guy said it was working fine when he pulled it. I took his word for it and immediately busted her open (without testing anything first) and put in new filter caps from Joe and a DC...

I have been too embarrassed to tell you guys what I found when I got back home. I must have been exhausted on Thursday night, because I apparently had my meter set to AC. (Facepalm) All is well. I went home, verified +/- 80vdc, adjusted my bias, and hooked her back up. She sounds great. Again.

Oh, I'm 100% certain that I am at fault. I have the newer backplane boards with fuse holders. When I was missing B-/B+ the first thing I did was power down and check the 7 glass fuses - three off of the transformer and two on each backplane. All checked good. What's strange is that the amp has...

Ugh, I'm having trouble with my WOPL400 again. A few months back you guys (mostly Joe ) helped me out with a distorted right channel. I reflowed all of the 0.33 ohm resistors from the top of the backplane board and the problem went away. For a while. When it came back this time reflowing from...
