Any suggestions are welcome.

Scott aka 'dingus' gave me these wonderful AR's http://starchive.phxaudiotape.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7528

My Yamaha Mx-800U drives them well but, they are one of the few speakers that can be tri-amped. As he said in the link, they are a bit bright, so maybe tubes for the midrange and tweeter?

My SAE A202 amp has a very tubey sound, maybe use that for the mids? And a nice '50's Pilot for the highs? The Yammie strutin' the bass!!

The SAE P102 preamp has dual outputs, full spectrum so I might need an active crossover...any ideas?

Scott, buddy, thank you so very much for these beasties!! :happy7:, I was lost without my Martin-Logans and you kept me in audio nirvana :blob::blob::blob::blob:

Gotta have an electronic crossover. Check out Behringer's, not a bad unit and fairly cheap. Din't even think about Pioneer's, they've gone nuts. The ast D-23 on e-bay brought 3400.00 , haven't seen an SF-850 on there for awhile so hard to say about them..

Have had 3 e-crossovers, the Behringer CX3400, DCX2496, and Ashly XR2001. Both Behringers were bought new, the Ashly, used and bought in the past year and who knows how old it is. Winner, by a landslide, the Ashly.

Why? If the speakers are set to be tri-amped aren't the X-overs already installed? My Epos 16s are tri-ampable. You just pull the jumpers.

The SAE A202 is rated at 100wpc @8ohms, it's the baby of that series. I have no doubt what so ever that it can double that into 4ohms and surpassed many other amps into the 2ohms the Martin Logans demanded from it over many, many long listening jams late into the night. Current in spades :tongue1:

The transformer is an aerospec finned donut like I've never seen before, way, way cool :glasses8:

So there's 3 crossovers in the Epos?
If it is a three way speaker the yes 3 crossovers. They just strap the inputs together on the outside ofthe speakers. If you want to use more then one amp you simply remove one or more of the straps. My definitive Tech speakers are setup to use three amps also, but I only use one amp.

Lar, if I'm right on these thoughts you need to split the frequencies from the source; ie from the preamp to the different speaker drivers. A out-board crossover is needed. You use the amp best suited to the driver driven, I just talkin' out loud here. I've wanted to try this since Scott sent these to me.

Stuwee they could be set up either way. My definitive Tech Speakers simply have a Low, Mid and High inputs, they are jumpered together so you can use one amp. If you want to use two or three amps you simply take on or two of the jumpers off. You feed each input the full spectrum and the speakers crossovers filter out what part of the signal those drivers cannot handle.

I know in the old days some of the speakers did need external crossovers to use multiple amps.

Craig, if you got the amps together, you could use signal splitters to feed them with a single pre...
Hey bud, so many, many thanks again!! I have a huge room, 25x15' and these AR's do need some breathing room, that's why I'm thinking about the tri-amp thing.

The big Yammie works fine, I just see so much potential in these, always nice to hear from ya buddy!!

If you go passive you will need all amps to be the same power/input sensitivity or you need gain pots on the amps so you can dial them in to be the same. Going active triamp this is not a requirement and it does allow for possible improved control of drivers by amp thru elimination of the passive crossover components. (able to take advantage of damping factor somewhat)
