eminence1963, I have an Otari 5050 that has been modded at one time so it does 15, 7 1\2 & 3 3\4. It works but has one reel spindle that is set deeper than the other so the tape winds off center on the reel. Do you know anything on how to adjust them? The balanced in\outputs are fun to wire a conversion cable to rca jacks.

Lots of god questions. My 5050 will do all 3 speeds you mentioned as well. I do believe they all do to be honest! Just a flip of the switch on the rear panel is all that is required. There is a set screw on that reel table that you can loosen to adjust the reel table height. You can download the service manual from HiFi engine on the WWW. As far as wiring up cable all I did was buy them already made from monoprice.com. I also went a step further and bought a remote from Ebay as well. Cant live without one. Also I got a step up box for recording from my preamp due to the lower output of RCA to XLR's. A necessity for recording from home gear to pro gear.
