Northwind's 400 to WOPL 500

Thats the prob lol it cost 45$ to ship each way lol. So I'm gonna have to go local and let him fig it out. This and that 1250 is why I need that second table from you lol. Plus I need a backup anyway.im hoping to have that 1250 this week or nxt. I keep talkin about my fully restored 1250 but All I have is seen it all cleaned and new caps and stuff. It is super duper clean but he is going through it with a fine toothed comb. Or at least that's the feedback I'm getting. Fingers crossed

What if you win the 400???

What if you win the 400???

He would be one happy mutha I guarantee. That tube amp and other stuff he has would be sold to finance more PL equipment in a heartbeat LMAO

Once you experience these amps, there is no turning back. I practically blew up my CV's the other day and Blackie did not even break a sweat

EDIT: Honestly, as much as I would love to own one of Lee's hyper builds, I would be very happy to see you win this amp

If I win I will prob put the pioneers on shelf get out my at-15s and see if I can blow them up lol. My fingers are really crossed on this lol. I want to be WOPL'ed!!! Somebody is gonna be happy

A 400 shouldn't toast an AT-15's That was the modernD9 correct??

It should not blowup my CV's either as they are rated at 300w each but the woofers were popping bad

Jason, if for some reason I do get lucky and actually manage to win Lee's brute, Blackie will be in the mail to you so you can see what we are talking about

Awesome!! I'd love to hear it. I'm a pl virgin let alone a WOPL

Is blackie a 700?

No, she's a quasi 400 built by Jer. My CV's are not d9s/AT15s. They are 3 way E-712's w/ 12" woofs. Blackie easily take them to their limit. I asked Jer about this because the amp seems to really hit hard with the dynamics and the lowend dynamics are what is causing the woofs to pop like that. I am almost willing to bet that if I had a set of either, Blackie would make the 15"ers pop

EDIT: Lee, it's hard to explain but put it like this, when the first note hits on whatever source I am using, it sounds LIKE A BOMB GOING OFF for a second and then the level drops down to normal. What is that? Just a massive surge of initial power? It makes Debbie and Jake jump everytime. This is why I am very careful to drop the volume down a little bit before the next track starts if I am listening at really high volume levels. If I don;t catch it, the internal speaker protections activate and it sometimes take 5 minutes before they will reset

One way or another, we will pop that cherry for you. With a WOPL, you do not get any lubricant either, just got to take it raw

Got a CD player with a volume control? Hook the 400 direct to the cd p[layer, and check then. Sounds like some processor loop in the pre-amp is activated, like a dynamic range expander WHICH IS NOT NEEDED with these amps. 3bx, RG-2, etc depending on the db setting will do this too....

My dbx-DX5 CD player has a DAIR circuit (dynamic recovery) and I also have a ADC DSS100 that I use with the TT. That must be it. I will make sure they are deactivated when playing a CD. Thanks, I speculated about the DAIR circuit many times in past posts. It's awesome at low levels but a speaker crippler at high volumes

And when you have frequency response down to 10hz flat, doubly so.

Thanks for confirming that Lee. Going to listen to some old Van Halen shortly and put the gas to her raw

I agree with Lee about the expanders. I use a DBX 3BX in my system (personally I wouldn't be without it) BUT I'm very careful with it. I'm running dual WOPL 1000's biamped, and I noticed right away that the "Equalizer" setting on my Dahlquist active crossover has to be very low or it is going to overdrive the lower octave. I just don't need it, depending on the program source of course. Some vinyl I need to add some bottom end, but not much. With the amplifier's flat frequency response down to 10 Hz, you have to remember that the expanders and especially the low frequency subharmonic generators that were made back in the 70's were designed for amps whose frequency response rolled off quite a bit higher than the WOPLs do. So those units addressed a problem that we don't have now in the lower octaves of our systems.
Does the ADC subharmonic synthesizer operate all the time? I'm thinking that is more likely the problem...unless you crank your 3BX way up. I've popped subwoofer and tweeter fuses doing that, especially with the turntable. I have to always be aware of the capabilities of my system now that I've stepped up to massive amounts of amplifier headroom.
