Hello All.

I've been a long time member at AudioKarma.org. Just learned about this forum after buying a non-working Phase Linear 700 B amp at a flea market. @laatsch55 has been patiently trying to help me get this amp running.

Already see a lot of familiar names here. Look forward to meeting more of you.

The Pilot combo has been sitting unused for a while. The speakers I've been using lately are not high sensitivity.

Welcome to Phoenix. I am sure you will find all the help you need here on that PL700. This forum is the premium Phase Linear forum for quite some time.

Thanks guys.

I've done a bunch of tube amp restoration work. When to comes to solid state, my experience is less. Have completely recapped and replaced problematic transistors in a Pioneer SX-636 purchased new circa 1976. Have also completely recapped a Pioneer SX-1010 and done miscellaneous other work on Sony and Marantz integrated amps and receivers, mostly cap and diode replacement.

Will start a new thread some time this week summarizing the problems found to date and work done on the 700 B. I look forward to learning from you all.

BM it was a good idea to come over here. I may get a call and be gone for days and there are folks here that know a hell of a lot more than I do. So ya smoked R16 on a PL 020 board??

Yep, smoke spewed from R16 after the last round of work I did on the PCB. Will go into more detail when I get a new thread started on this amp.

Sounds good Bud...Mr. White Oak himself will probably be on your case. He's pretty good at this troubleshooting stuff...

I started a new thread on this amp in the DIY forum. But I think a message flashed up when I saved it stating Admin review and approval will be needed. Probably because it is long.

If all is working (apparently that is not the case) R16 is protected from being smoked by the presence of D4 and D5. Since it smoked, I would check those 2 diodes and I would also be very suspicious of Q5, the one in the middle of the board with the big metal heatsink hanging on it. Those are pretty notorious for failure or intermittency due to mechanical stress from the heat sink mass.

Hi R75, glad to see you finally posting about your amp over here. I knew it was where you wanted to be when you first said it needed work.

Hope you get it up and running properly (or better as many here have done). Maybe one day I can get one within my near zero budget. I've been in the other camp most of the time but still have a desire to try a nice worked 400 or 700.

XJ, perhaps this time the lottery will be yours....

I could handle that. I like the lotteries on this site. Lots of anticipation and an actual chance of winning, not like the 258 Million to 1 deal with the power ball. I've got some amps that can go if I win a PL and just added some speakers that need to power. Dang them DQ-10s suck amps dry.
