New In Box 1801

I would rather have a used Mark Levinson with more power for that kind of money
 
The 250 wpc rating showed is inaccurate. When bench tested mine was putting out over 500 per channel at 4ohm. If youve never heard one of these amps, I suggest you give one a chance if ever it passes you by.

I have heard these many times over the years, could have bought two of them a few years ago for $400 each
 
Thats a good price. I suppose you didnt enjoy them much? I would have bought them for that price.

I never bought them. Back then I was running a pair of Amber 70 amps as monoblocks and was very happy with what I had. He might still have them for all I know, I can check for you???

LOL, thanks for the offer, but no thanks. Shipping them would be a fortune. Not to mention I have 2 of them to deal with here already. Unless someone can provide service records showing that the service bulletin has been applied to the amps its only a matter of time before they go tits up. As soon as my newest 1801 started acting up I pulled it from the system.
 
I'd a jumped on em with both feet. THEY are repairable, lots of things to do to make em better. Ever try to get your hands on some Levinson or Krell schematics??????????

True but back then, there was no Phoenix Audio Forum and there is very few shops around that would even mess with them. They are more interested in selling you new product then doing repairs

As for the Levinson and Krell schematics, it looks like most of the Levinson's can be had free online, not sure about the Krell stuff. Only thing I ever owned by Krell was a preamp that I got at a pawn shop

So true. No place in town where I grew up would touch it. When I had one eye rebuilt in 99 I had to take it to another city. Was a slow process back then. I think the tech had waited 3 months for the SM to arrive from Bose. It was almost a full year before I had it back home.
 
Wow, what an incredible find! Ben, I would get both of your 1801s repaired as best as possible and be confident in knowing you have a fairly stout set-up for power amps.

That is the eventual plan Nando. I have located an AK member that lives in Ottawa who can do a good resto on these units. The big thing is the dc protection. I have always been skeptical of the newest 1801 as it was an unknown with its service history. The Crown amp was only a band-aid solution until the time comes.
 
When I borrowed Doug's original Phase Linear 400 amplifier, I patched in his speaker protection box. The pigtails from the protection box go to the left and right +ve amplifier outputs, and the +ve leads from left and right speakers connect to the corresponding protection box connectors. The fuses are 1.5 amps, I believe. Speaker protection is something I haven't considered in my own system.

While I dont think its always necessary, as I dont run any now with the Crown and Yorkville power amps, with an amp like the 1801 its very real. When my old man had the one eyed bastard, he took out a woofer in the Elite speakers. I also took out a woofer in the Elites years later. The expense of 400 dollar woofers became very real very fast.
 
Well then, for added security why don't we all consider building and patching one of these boxes to protect our speakers? I should be able to find all the materials, locally.

Probably depends on the speaker, although the K's Al Klappenberger crossover came with a 1-1/2 amp fuse to protect the woofer that was upped to a 5'er in a big hurry. I have found that good clean power is your best investment against power related problems...
