I hate all Digipaks.

They are not robust enough and the spines fade in moderate sunlight.

There are some exceptions....

These two limited editions (although not a digipack) are a treasure:

There certainly is some very attractive packaging for CDs now. If I buy something fragile (such as card sleeves), I'll just remove the disc and put it in a standard jewel case.

I highly recommend those lift-lock ones though and they should be grabbed instantly if seen!

See I find the plastic cases to be fragile. So many cases with broken hinges. When I inherited my old man's CD collection, most of the cases were thrashed. I ended up having to order 100 or 150 cases as all the teeth and hinges were pretty much shot. Not to mention so many with cracked fronts. Even still, with my CD collection always growing, I find it hard to keep up with jewel cases. I could probably use up another 100 and still need more.

With all that being said, the lift/lock case appears to be a much better design than the old tooth style. At that price, even if I could find them, I need 600 plus dollars to switch my cases over.

The normal jewel case is far from perfect but it probably protects the disc better than a Digipak or similar cardboard constructions.

As with all things, taking care is the key to preservation. Common sense stuff like putting discs back in their cases and then to somewhere safe from harm is often best practice.

One of the reasons I moved away from vinyl was the packaging! I found record storage cumbersome and my shift to those 5" silver things was very speedy indeed.

Care is the best advice for users of both CD and Vinyl formats. I use outer sleeves on all my mini lp style cd cases, similar to the vinyl outer sleeves, only cd size.

Daren: I haven't noticed fading yet of the spines, but a bulk of my CDs are stored in a wooden furniture stand, out of direct sunlight. And the rest of my overflow of CDs are in zippered CD storage cases.

The biggest reason my new air conditioner is where it is has to do with the sun hitting that corner and shining all the way to my pillow at various times of the year if I leave the door open. That and the fact that windows extend from the front door all the way around the side to the kitchen entrance leave the front entrance a greenhouse and I'm amazed my cassettes survived that in a big trunk in the heat there for a while when I first noticed this seven years ago after my first winter here.

The boarded over spot with the A/C now solves that glare and no recordings sit in sunlight...it's dark in here by design and choice.

Fading is not my problem, it's leaving them loose in or out of the case and occasionally they end of somewhere where they shouldn't and get broken. It's another reason I rip and copy. Sorting and decluttering can make a bigger mess than not and then rearranging everything.

It didn't stop me from printing sides of the Christmas mailings last night...that was fairly easy.

Yes - thrift stores can be a good way to source cases.

I've got more than 3500 cd's (original ones, no burned copies) in total in the archive I guess...
Most of them are stored in boxes in alphabetical order and out of the daylight, and the ones I play regular are stored in a rack in my working place.
Yes, some covers are faded through the years, but who cares....

Wow Miles, that's a pile of discs. Im somewhere in the 7 to 800 range now. I added 2 more shelves into my cd rack in the winter sometime, which made room for about another 150. Im now piling discs where ever I can find space. I have an identical shelf which I use to store DVD's. It will likely be re purposed in the near future to accommodate the ever growing mass of discs.

A huge harddisc and some good ripping software can be a solution....

While that "could" be a solution, I dont think that method is for me. I no longer have a rig tied into my system, so playback would be through my little Altec computer speakers. Even when I did have a comp wired through the stereo, I rarely played music from the computer. Id rather use my tape decks, reel, md, cd, or vinyl.

Miles: That's an amazing collection! No wonder you have so much music to draw from for your mix tapes.

I used to keep my pre-recorded cassettes in alphabetical order by year of issue. All were stored in suitcase style portable cases. And I kept index cards noting the band/artist and name of album. All my store bought cassettes had the original purchase receipt inside the cassette box. I haven't got a clue why I made index cards for all of my tapes, as I never lent them out... except for one time, and that's an interesting story involving a pair of exotic dancers.
