So, Hottie bought a new computer. A windows 7, she has an XP. We have Simple Tech external hard drives for backup. Can she put all her XP files on there and then transfer to 7 when she gets the n ew one up and running?

I would think that should be no problem. What types of files are we talking about here? I use 2 internals for storage... i can pop those into an XP comp and they work just fine.

Sure will Lee. My server is XP and my workstation is 64bit Win7. Do it all the time.

If thats a program you may need a version that is compatible with windows 7. Sometimes they are different for 32 and 64 bit windows as well.

Edit: Just re reading... Windows 7 should auto detect those and they should work fine after plugging them in.

Making the switch should be a breeze. Windows 7 is a much better opsys than XP. Way more stable and user friendly. Jeez I cant even think of how long its been since microsoft pulled the plug on XP support. If for some reason you dont like it, im pretty sure you can mount XP in 7.

Favorites, settings, Quickbooks, etc. photoshop,
Now hmmm... Files as long as you know where they are on the old machine and where they need to go on the new one are one thing, but each of the above has it's own challenges and procedure. Read up on this link first, but be aware that even the utility described may or may not do everything you expect it to..

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7?T1=tab03

Hopefully that util (or if someone here has used a better one out there) does it for you, but if not.. then it gets a bit "complicated" ... Keep in mind that you WILL have to reinstall programs - no getting around that. Just copying the files under "program files" rarely does what you want, and usually you end up with a program that only half works, then half bombs...

Other items to consider... For example.. favorites... depends, Lee.. Firefox and Internet Explorer both keep this information stored two different ways. Firefox is definitely much more "self contained" tho as far as what you have to move over, how you do it, and when you do it; IE... well.. yeah it's a little more spread out..

Settings in general are usually stored in what is called "the registry". There are several ways to get this copied over, none pretty.. and since you're going to basically a different "family" of windows, I wouldn't recommend it (it would be safer to go to server 2003 from XP since it is also built with the same "foundation", as an example)

Not to scare ya too bad... but I would try the easy transfer utility.. and the ONE that is for windows 7. I would try that first, but also AFTER all of your programs have been installed. Or someone else here can suggest a good, SOLID utility that would do this for you. I can't recommend any because I usually (still) do it all the hard way... install the OS... install the programs... copy DATA only OR where it is straight forward to do a full FORKLIFT of a program and it's settings, then reconfigure the programs I couldn't just forklift over.

Lee as Jer said there are issues to backing up and restoring things. The external drive will work in transferring data, but won't help any in settings or software. You need to install the same softwares on the win 7 computer that you have on the Win Xp computer, and that is only if they are compatible with win 7. Most probably are but no guarantees..

The data part will be more complete if you copy the data files manually. The windows migration wizard works, but it may not find all the data if you store them in folders different then the default storage folders.

The browser favorites should be you easiest move because all browsers allow you to export/import your favorites. You would need to export from the old computer and then import that file into the browser on the new computer.

Good Luck

My daughter got caught with this. Some programs written for XP will run in "XP Mode" in Win 7, but here's the kicker, XP Mode is only available in certain versions of Win 7. Win 7 Home is not one of them. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7 I can't recall what app she needed to run, just she was rightly PO'd that she had to shell out more cash.

Good, still have a year with XP then. Man I hate changing over.
I will be doing the same thing shortly to my wife's new laptop, only it has Win 8. I backed up "my documents", exported favourites and Outlook .pst to an external HDD. I'll have a go at merging the two later. I will still have three boxes running XP. Just because the support ends doesn't mean you need to change it. I've still got a MAC running Panther. That's a whole different story....
