the mind boggles.....

It's funny how when I used to 'tour', I found even a 100KW PA was sometimes not quite enough, and now that I'm home, sometimes even 20 Watts is too much!

I just can't win.
 
A question for you Lee.

I often read how PL's don't like to run down into 4 Ohms, but what happens if you go the other way? Like running into 32 Ohms or higher. Will it kill 'em?
I often would like run into a higher impedance to get the amp to 'work' a little harder to bring some grunt back into the equation.
I found in the past, that you can 'sort of' compare it to when you run an engine at higher revs to get that 'power band' thing happening, and do think of amps as being similar. They just sound 'fatter' when running 'hotter'.
Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.
Even sound desks sound better when 'red-lining', although that's argumentative of course....
 
In the world of push-pull class AB topology , it's always dfarkest just before the dawn. PL's will do 4 ohms, with fan cooling. They're totally capable, just lack heratsink space. 32 or more ohms is fine. But then you start affecting transfer function. When the output impedance of one device is equal to the input impedance of the next device more power is transferred. Most pro stuff is 600 ohm out and in, great transfer, you probably know that.
The distortion spec for class AB stuff is least just before clipping, that's why it sounds good loud.
 
The more you run something to capacity the bettyer your signal to noise ratio etc. Like the crossovers in the K-Horns, there are better crosses for 90 db and down. The AL K. universals start sounding good at 95 and up. Synergy, component matching, esr, there are a myriad of "effects" of electronic components, Joe is just now getting through to me that the subtlest effect can have a profound effect on the sound.

If you run the amp into higher impedance, it will not kill it at all. You can run the amp with no speakers connected, thus infinite impedance all day long and it will not care. Turn it all the way up if you like, the amp will be cool as a cucumber.

Run it into a low impedance load and the opposite is true. I run my PL700 into 4 ohm load speakers. It delivers more power to the load at a fixed output (voltage) level if the load impedance is low compared to the load impedance being high.

I'm living in an environment where lots of power just isn't an option now.
I'd be kicked out of here in no time if I ran music to a comparable level to what I'm used to working with live bands. So I try to 'mimic' that sound by using less efficient components and running 'em harder. If that makes sense???
