If ya go with a single make it a 5 watter. On some of the Claire Bros pro amps they had a 20 watt 5 ohm dale chassis mount.

Yeah, I'm like that too. The Claire Bros were 700's of course running balls out at 4 ohms too.

Wow Jer, this is progressing fast, can't wait to see pictures of the fully assembled unit with the meters pointing to the right

Also interested in the procedure to clean up the face plate is, not sure if that is cigarette smoke or what

I went up to Andover MA yesterday to pick up the Quantum 5's from AK's Baco99. As soon as I got them home, I fired up my Peavey 6505 and pulled the '76 Gibson Explorer out of it's case to warm up. Tossed in a Whitesnake CD and started to jam along to Slide It In. In the next 5 minutes, I ended up replacing 4 fuses in the Q5s...

The Q5's must have some kind of crazy draw because at half volume on the Sony AV900 that I am using for surround sound (when I hook up the Q5s, I was only running standard 2 channel), I noticed the display dimming to the beat of the music then POOF, no mids or highs. I understand some of the old Infinity's are known as amp killers but that is ridiculous. I freaked out thinking I made a bad investment but it appears the Sony cannot drive those Watkins woofers. The Q5s are rated at 30-250 watts so I thought this would not be an issue for the 100w Sony. The amp did not distort to my ears at all before the fuses went on the speakers. It must have started to clip though right? The fuses only go when the amp clips right?

I'm thinking it's time to post up my Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Japanese and US lp collection now to come up with the funds to pay Jerry as soon as I know what the grand total is. If it's too high, then I guess Jer will have another killer amp in his setup. My budget was around $300 not including return shipping, looks like it is over that???

I just hope the hell that I don't run into these type of issues with the PL 400 smoking the Q5's, looking at Jer's figures, it should have plenty of headroom

Anyway, I have a Yamaha A1 that I am going to put back into service today. It's a DC intergrated amp rated at 70w per channel and I and hoping it has the balls and headroom to drive these speakers until the big boy takes over. From reviews I have read, it's a well regarded amp and the phono stage is one of the best I have heard from a vintage amp

Jer, shoot me a total and I will see what I can or cannot do. I hate the fact that at 48 years old I have to worry about money but I have not worked fulltime since November. Being a contractor in this economy sucks. I will be so disappointed if I can't get this beautiful amp back

The Watkins woofers were a challenge for any amp. They really screamed for a bad ass PA or pro amp. The WOPL 1000 would wake em up, and if that didn't do it I have a Carver TP 2400 that does 838 per side into 8 ohms, a friggin beast.

Hooked the A1 up to them this morning and same problem, the right speaker keeps blowing fuses and I know it's not the A1, it's a solid dependable amp with plenty of headroom. I am starting to think it's that speaker and not me or my equipment, the other speaker is not blowing fuses. I hooked up my Bose 501's and they take everything the Sony and the A1 can feed them with no issues at all

This is starting to suck

Just called you Jer, no answer so I will try later

The crossovers and the internal circuitry on the Watkins can go south. Got a meter?? Check ohmage on the inputs on the suspect speaker, that can tell you a lot right there.

They handle 250 watts so I think 838 watts would be a waste right? I do have a rackmount pro amp out in the garage that I run for the mancve system, maybe I will try that, it's 300w per channel

The crossovers in the Watkins design show the amp a very large capacitance , between 1,000-2,000uf. Something wrong in that circuit can certainly take out a 5 amp fuse.

10 ohms

The fuses are 250v 0.5 amp fastblow for the speakers, again, it's the speaker fuses going, not the amps

Double or triple the power is never a waste. My K-horns are rated at 100 continous, but I routinely put 300-400 through em. It has to be CLEAN power but a speak will take a lot if it's not distorted.
