Redoing the speaks next door...

Ok, I'm bored... hehe

So I did buy a pair of Polk Monitor 70's which I'm listening to now in addition to the D-9's (M80 is powering 'em while the WOPL's still behind the CV's). Bought 'em awhile back, but I still haven't been much impressed. They don't quite do the "wow" for me..

Before them, I had got a pair of Infinity Reference Six'es off a guy on CL. Shoulda looked closer, because turns out one of the two woofers was replaced with some other type/brand, and there's a lil bit of foam rot going on with one of the other drivers (not sure which).

So I'm thinking here.. the cabinets are really nice, so maybe if I did a project of replacing all drivers (maybe not the emit tweeters.. dunno) and doing my own crossover, it may be worth the effort?

I'm thinking that first I should either find the schematic for the existing crossover, or reverse engineer it. Just as a "base"... Then start looking at what the best drivers would be for it.

What do you guys think? For reference, here's what they look like now...

Infinity's had some nice stock drivers Jer although the foam surrounds don't hold up at all for some reason. You may want to consider refoaming the surrounds.

The one you are showing in the pic seems to be all original drivers. Must be the other one that had the woofer replaced???

That's correct. Looks like a cheap no-name put in there.

I'd like to make a good project out of it, with a custom crossover made with "serious" components (although wow.. 150.00 for just an inductor?.. maybe a notch down from THAT product line?). Beef up the power handling, etc... I might go with the idea of a passive radiator for the 10" opening and the 6" would be the active LF driver. All sorts of ideas

Dude you can build a very nice pair of speakers for a lot less than you can buy for the price. Plus it is way cool the first time you hear them. The 1st thought is WOW I built and designed these. The ole chest sticks out about 6 inches. At that moment you are an Audio God. LOL

That's what I'm thinking too... just "cheating" a little with having the cabinets already "premade" hehe
