Technics SL-1800

I,d like to find a junk SL just to get the circuit board ,,I don,t know if it would be my #1 table but I,d like to get it back to it,s previous Glory

I was considering spending some decent money next year on a new TT. This is making me think harder on not bothering. I'm definitely reaping benefits from this AT that I wasn't before. Funny, that guy saying anything about the $100 TT. Should have asked him what a decent $300 TT looks like. I've had 2 Pro-Jects myself. I don't want to offend any readers that like them but they were not with me very long. Purchased about 10yrs apart, not a great experience in both cases.

You cannot go wrong with a Technics SL turntable. As far as I am concerned, they are among the best but do not possess any snob appeal though. Despite my favorability towards the Technics tables, I have to admit to a hankering for one of the simple, old Rek o Kut belt drive tables with the 14# platter on them. That and a good SME 3009 tonearm and I would have my nostalgia fix cured.

Joe, I know all about snob appeal. That's why I was never looking to move in this direction. Now I'm glad to have it in my system. A step up from here, new, would likely be a huge expense. I was looking at George Merrill's offering though, which is not super expensive. That human touch and experience is attractive, but would it be much better? Hmmm. Until then, I'll just enjoy.

Unfortunately a lot of other people are thinking like you are, the market is driven by sales and availability, the number of these type of TT's is limited and the prices have gone to the point of rediculous. I continue to watch do to curiosity. Maybe a local or craigslist you can find one still reasonable in price.

Yes Joe. I had one on a Denon DP1500 TT that I lost in a garage fire.

Needle jumps much easier on this table for some reason, like walking across the room. Why would that be? Needle wear, VTA?

I'm afraid your probably right. What bothers me is that it should technically be better then the other TTs that I had.

I have the same cartridge, love it. Replacement styli are no fun to purchase, thankfully they last quite a while. I mated this cartridge to a minimalist Pioneer PL-112D belt-drive manual turntable. I took it in to Breyer Sound in San Diego for their "Tune-up Clinic" one day. The tech actually laughed at me, he said you have a $300 cartridge on a $100 turntable. I told him the turntable does exactly what I want and nothing else, it tracks at 1 gram and anti-skates at 1.5 gram, the motor is synchronous and dead-on stable. He hooked up his $$$ test equipment and said I should increase my tracking to 1.25 gram. Then he asked me where I got the turntable from and I told him to have a nice day. Once I thought about a Thorens TD-160 turntable but thought, Why?

I had one of those! I've never had a Technics that could hold to exact speed, always more or less. I have a Sony PS-T25 that does but it needs a LOT of parts.

Gimbel(?) screw, arm rest, lid,the ID plate on the front is the least of my worries.

I have a 1300, not the Mk II and they have problems with the cam in the auto return. I'd look for other models in that series and find the free literature sites like electrotanya.com for manuals...I DL'ed SL-1950 (a changer) for a lark.
