With all the working 700's scheduled for departure from the mancave this week I thought I better finish my Spec 2 restoration. I had only lacked small signal trannies on the driver boards and electro's and new small signal in the meter amp board. New meter lights. Polished all connectors and pin. I did not have the current limiters set right either. They would activate just as the eyeballs started to viobrayte, wouldn't get you to the standard 200HZ wobble.

I like to see the Pioneer Spec 2s gettiing a going-over to give many more years of service in their second life. Nice to see your updated progress, Lee.

That's a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad Spec 2 right there. With he current limiters set at factory spec, 348 watts into 8 ohms, both driven and loaded. At Lee setting 385 watts into 8 both loaded and driven.

Yep. Pretty comfortable inside a Spec 2 now Nando. Even tickled the current limiters this time.

What surprises me is how well these Spec 2 amplifiers exceed factory specs. I can't recall seeing a product review when these amps were tested new in the 70's. Do you have an old review from a magazine to share with us, Lee?

What is the diameter of the big ones Lee? I have 1-1/2" skirted fluted knobs on my rescue Crown DC-300 and these are too small (the original Crown size was 1-7/8")

Love it. Fascinated by knobs as a kid. Swiped a few from cool machines when I was young at work in factories. Deco-looking translucent green with red pointer line, I wonder where those are now.

I'm tellin ya, my nomination for Knobmate of the Year. They've got everything, that hefty, manly feel, gription recessess, 2 set screws 90 deg opposed, pointer (with Hilite) can look as home on a variac as a balance pot.

2-1/8 on the big Joseph and 1" on the small.

KNOBILICIOUS!!!

Tried that myself, but Dad was big AND fast, bad combo to tackle with if you were lacking one of those two traits.

The Spec 2 is starting to sound like SHIT!!. Bass is severely muddled, clips at 280 watts, just horrible. It got new PS caps a couple years ago and 6 months after they were put in got a notice that they may be counterfeit. I see some bulging, on a 22,000uf, 100 volt cap that's NOT A GOOD thing.
