New LPs

Hi Chris,

I got their second album, routinely known as "The Brown Album." I think Geri can relate a few stories of what happened while their band was on the road. In the movie "The Last Waltz", or even the LP you can hear Ronnie Hawkins, just after being introduced to the concert goers, and before he starts singing "Who Do You Love?", exclaim to all "Big time, Bill. Big time." That was in reference to Bill, their road manager.

That's a classic Band album for sure. I misunderstood your original post and thought you bought a Ronnie Hawkins album.

If you had your choice of favourite Ronnie Hawkins albums, which would it be Chris? I haven't come across any of his albums, as of yet, in my usual trips to the 2nd hand stores.

I have 7 different Ronnie Hawkins albums. Only one is on vinyl, the rest are on cd. I would probably reccommend "The Best Of..." album on Rhino Records as a place to start. If you want to get more indepth I would go with his first 2 albums for Roulette Records. The vinyl of these are high dollar collector's items. Fortunately, you can pick them up cheaply on cd (as 2 on 1 cds) from oldies.com. You could spend around 15 bucks and get 4 of Ronnie's hard to find Roulette albums on 2 discs. Not a bad deal at all!

Hi Larry,

I like Gov't Mule. I didn't discover the group until a friend of mine, Johnny, brought me up to speed on their music. He has seen them in concert a few times, and he copied a few bootleg CDs for me from music recorded off their sound board from a few of their concerts. The sound quality is fair on the CDs, but the music is great. I have music recorded from their two day concert in Warfield, San Francisco in 2001, if I recollect correctly.

I've been a fan of Warren Haynes since about '83 when I saw him playing with David Allan Coe on "Austin City Limits". I've seen the Mule live 3 times. I'm glad I got to see them before Allen Woody died. They were at an outdoor concert that also featured Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels and Big Brother + The Holding Company. My 2 favorite Mule albums are "Live At Roseland Ballroom" and "Live...With A Little Help From Our Friends".

Chris: I think Gov't mule would be a dynamite act to watch. Last night, I watched Joe Bonamassa on KCTS "Beacon Theatre: Live from New York (2012)."

Joe is a great guitarist. It's the first I've seen him play. Paul Rodgers sang for a couple of numbers with the band. Joe's singing is middle-of-the-road, and even Paul R. wasn't that terrific in that particular concert.

Nando, I like Joe. I've seen that concert listed on the Dish Network program guide but haven't had a chance to watch it. I saw Joe live back in 2005. He was 1st on the bill at a B.B. King Blues Fest. He was there with Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Robert Cray and B.B. himself. I had nice seats in row 14 for that one.

Next weekend I'm going to go see The Richie Furay Band again. Richie's voice has really held up well. His show is a great mix of his entire career (from Buffalo Springfield and Poco on through today).

Next time B.B. comes through your area you might want to go see him. He isn't getting any younger. I still regret never going to see George Carlin when he came around and now it's too late.
