Im working on a Teac RS-277US. It needs all belts replaced. The main capstan belt (dual capstan system) measures .060" x 13 1/4"
I can only find replacements that are .046" and .075" cross section. So, which way would be the better way to go, smaller or bigger than original?

Thanks all!

but, is it a flat belt or a square belt?

in general, for flat belts, lower thickness can provide better wow and flutter but if it's lower thickness than the original you should consider to get it also a small bit shorter so that, in the end, you get more or less the same tension as a slightly longer but thicker belt.

if it's square and its cross section is too small it might apply too little tension and not making the work properly, even if you choose it shorter.

But, in any cases, if those belts aren't expensive, I would try to get a few different options, try them all and then choose which works best, by also trying to measure wow and flutter and/or checking speed stability throughout the whole side of the cassette.

I know it seems complex... because this is a complex matter, actually. :p

I use a tape measure through my belt loops on a comfortable fitting pair of pants to get the exact measurements.

That sets the “middle” hole with two or three either side of it.

Generally I like to use the Latigo leather, but you have to be mindful of the dye- it can stain light pants and shirts u til it’s broken in.

I’ll treat it with pitch blend every so often. The color matches my redwings nicely.

Vince, its a square belt in a dual capstan unit. Not a real popular or valuable deck. New belts are about $7 each so Im trying to keep costs down a bit but I can afford to try a couple different sizes.
Not able to find a FSM for this model but did find one for a 273US. This manual lists W&F at .07% wrms which shouldnt be too difficult to obtain.
