Wound up picking up a Samsung on sale.
Nothing fancy , just a 55" 4 K set.
Have a small living room .
Had an equivalent LG also but the LG only had 2 HDMI and the Samsung had 3 .
Didn't want to play switch the cable game.
Blue Ray , cable box and Xbox all had to be connected.
Vizio going to the recycler .
Thanks for all the info.

I have a 100Hz Sony Bravia 55incher that I bought in 2008 and it's still going strong. No dead pixels, no backlight imbalance, no errors etc.
However, I don't watch TV either passively or actively - there are more important things to fill my time with in my opinion and so I only use it for occasional film-watching. Maybe that's contributed to its' operational longevity. Dunno.
It's only LCD tech but the picture, with films at least is still absolutely stellar and gives a 'faithful' colour reproduction afaiac and I knw exactly how current OLED TV's look - I'm not overly impressed enough to upgrade any time soon. With live sports maybe there's benefits but for my level of use, forget it.

I saw something interesting on youtube regarding TV manufacturer built-in obsolesensce recently. I can't find the video back to link it unfortunately but essentially most modern TV's go into a shutdown error mode and shit their pants as soon as something trivial like a dead pixel or voltage drop on a lighting module occurs. There's a simple bypass that involves some soldering/re-wiring but he didn't show this for obvious reasons.
Another good reason not to upgrade anytime soon I think.

EDIT:
Here we go. Found the vid after dredging back through my watch history. I'll never get that time back :D

Backlight failure on LED TV'S is typical.
I have done 2 repairs recently. If the TV has audio but a blank screen, try this.....If you can see a faint shadow of a picture by using a flashlight on an angle at the screen then the video board is most likely alive and working. Good chance the led driver power supply has given up due to some leds that gave up as well...
Some resistance checks should prove out.

Go to:

With the modle number get the lights and power supply board.

Really good tech help from them to boot !

Thanks Chris, a VERY interesting video.
I've fixed several monitors and TV's over the years with bad caps on the power supply.
There have been a few I couldn't revive, and I remember having my finger on that tan component while tracing power.

Wake me up when someone makes an OLED display that rolls up like a projection screen. No """smart""" features, no useless speakers, just a video input. I hate giant black rectangles in my living room.

That repair tech that made the video recommends Sony LED LCD's (non OLED) as number 1 for quality/reliability, with LG being in 2nd Place.
He does not like Samsung or Hisense, they come in all the time for repair and many times are not repairable because they won't supply parts or make the design near impossible to disassemble/reassemble. I acknowledge that an OLED image looks amazing though.
There are videos on youtube which show you how to bypass the protection chip from shutting down the backlight when there might only be 1 or 2 leaky or failing LEDs on the strip. That guy didn't want to show us, probably because it would affect his repair business.

The giant black rectangle goes away when you turn it on :evil4:
When I setup my Sony KD-55X7000G, I simply turned all the Smart and Wi-Fi features off. It is a 2019 Model and has been flawless. Have done a couple of firmware updates over time, they claim better performance etc.
My father has an earlier sony which has done insane hours and power cycles, they just keep going. I suspect it is a non-LED unit.

I've done a couple of LED strip and PS repairs on samsung LED's TV 's and agreed the repairs on LED's are relatively easy...
Wouldn't want to tackle any OLED repairs....
