If you read the info from NASA on the Artemis program, they are sending "the first person of color" to the moon and "the first woman" to the moon.

If you ticked both boxes, you'd be a shoe-in.

Note NASA already has very capable astronauts in both categories, so that's not an issue.

It just seems that an agenda is being pushed that is not needed, and I think the astronauts themselves would be the first to say that the "best qualified" for the task is the right choice, regardless of any other "requirements" placed from the outside.

Ok. I just checked them out, the 4 that they will send. They all seem highly qualified imo.
