700 Series 1 Build

Tool and Die Term:
Time, to line up in a particular sequence.....was called "clocking" in the very early years.
used for punch and die, mold making, etc.

Yeah, I worked in a machine shop in my early years, I was HUH'ing you because we had already gigged him on the screws..........

Initial backplane assembly started with TO-3 socket cup and pem nut soldering.

Fortunately, no screws in this assembly...

I used a glass plate salvaged from an old multi-function printer/scanner/copier for soldering the cups.

More progress today.

Mocked up transformer, rectifier, cap assembly.

For people looking to upgrade 700 Series 1, you will need to find a cap cradle from newer model or mount using band straps to the housing like original.

The cap cradle provides a more robust cap mount and a heat sink for the rectifier. Series 1 amps had the rectifier mounted to an aluminum plate on the top of the caps.

Completed initial housing assembly, mounted transformer, and placed backplane boards.

Placed packing tape over transformer bolts for additional isolation after cutting to size.

Also note, place anti-seize on transformer bolts if using stainless, they will gall and bind before fully seating. Don't ask me how I know....

90% of our injection plant plumbing and hardware is stainless, anerobic sealant/antiseize is carried by all our hands.

The Series 1 also had a funky dual RCA input configuration with a switch between them.

This requires making a new copper plate to connect RCA grounds.

The original plate could be cobbled to work, but I’m not into cobbling.

Also installed brand new heat sinks from Joe after chamfering all holes to help prevent cutting SIL pads during installation. All holes were very sharp from the punching process.

Beautiful heat sinks!! And NO thermal paste to deal with...
