I saw that too Perry, and while I am not an active firefighter anymore, but I have always lived in very rural, wooded areas. What
these videos show, is indeed a helicopter shooting flames to burn an area, that is what we call a "Backfire". A backfire works like a fire break in a wooded area, in that it burns CONTROLLED, and supervised, to use up all of the fuel, ahead of a fire that may be spreading uncontrolled. Uncontrolled fire gets to the "backfire" (not in an exhaust pipe) controlled burn area, and is stopped dead in it's tracks.....there is no fuel to keep it going. Manpower is always the key when setting backfires, as they need to be closely monitored, and routed, and shifting winds can really wreak havoc.
Helicopters are used because you see the uncontrolled fire in real time, and can check it's path immediately. It is also much faster and safer than being on the ground.
These wildfires sure have raised hell with everybody, the air here is really heavy with the smoke.
