Class D amps

What do you think about class D amps ?
My question is :
Why are there not class D amps for hifi ? ( I have seen only one model by Pioneer )
For PA now all power amps are in class D ( see Crown for instance )
and for me they "sound great ".
The yield is very high and you should save money for power supply and chassis .

I tried two Crown D amps on my SDA-SRS 2 speakers and did not like the sound of either. Keep in mind that they were both under 400.00 each. I bought both thru Zsounds and one had a bad channel so I was unable to listen to it long before the channel said bye. I found them powerful though. Just a sterile/possessed sound to me. Nothing sweet about them. That's just what I say about them though. I bought both with unbalanced and balanced inputs so I could hook them up to my Kenwood C2. They may well had sounded better using balanced inputs, no way for me to know that. Went back to my KW back M2 then from that to a B&K EX-442 and never came back from the B&K. Just my 2 cents worth. No affiliation with Zsounds but they refunded 100% of my money and were great to work with.

It has to do with how class D is done. Converting to digital and then current pumping back through Mosfets (read cheap switches) to be averaged through filters into analog has an effect on the phase information which you hear as a dead sound. They are most effective on bass speakers, where pumping current into a 2Ω Sub sounds ok.[FONT=&quot][/FONT]

Last year ( in a sea resort ) I listened to a system composed by amplified horn speakers in conjuction with an Allen and Heath 16
channel mixer .
O.K. we were outdoor , but the sound was similar to K Horns .
Naturally I spoke to the sound engeneer that gave me the specs of these speakers ( max 138 dB spl ) . I presume 2KW .
Sorry I don't remember the brand . I rebember only that they were american . This guy used My Way for set up and
I can assure that Frank was there ( alive ) .
This is the reason of my question .

PS Audio still makes audiophile class D amps.

They are good where you have very small space and need decent power.

IMO, unless you need efficiency/small space in your power amp (which most of us don't care about), why convert to digital only to go back to analog again with the attendant coloration that the brick wall filters insert.

I have guessed that the filter is critic and if there is phase distorsion the sound is poor .
Our brain doesn't like this phenomenon .

Like tube distortion vs solid state or Carver's transfer function calibrated circuit, seemingly a pleasurable distortion from the norm.

Yeah....why do even order harmonics seem ok to the brain??Does it superimpose the even order harmonic wavelength over the fundamental freq and see that it's pretty close??

I''m impressed with the value of added sub harmonic. Have you tried a Phase Coupled Activator? I use it on the lowest setting all the time now and like it's effect a lot.
