I suppose I would get a synthetic stock if I was going to slop around in the woods or marsh with it but this one will be seeing the range.

Now this is just an option, see if you can slip a dollar bill between the barrel and the wood stock if you can run it the length of the barrel your good to go, if not you should pull the stock and sand the barrel channel with some med grit paper and a appropriate size doll rod, use wood stain to cover your handi work and a little varnish or Tung oil and your good to go. The reason for this is during the summer the stock will pick up humidty and swell, the result will be the barrel deforming slightly,the reason is to isolate the barrel from stock, as you shoot the barrel will also heat up and warp slightly and have will have a similar result which will hurt accuracy a little JMTCI also just noticed the cross bracing on your rifle which you usually only find in more powerful calibers which speaks to Savage quality

OK will do Rob and report back. Good tip. They chamber this same rifle up to .308 is likely why you bet that cross bracing on the smaller calibers.

The dollar bill went all the way down the barrel with no restriction at all and even over the locking ring that locks the barrel length in place as well with no restriction. Went all the way to the receiver block.

Looks like this rifle is in good shape.
