I'm sure this is a familiar story to most of you guys...always on the quest for new gear. I was fortunate to find a local guy selling a Carver C-1 that had been recapped by Carver Audio Repair in 2014 (even came with the invoice) for a very reasonable price. I decided to pick it up and give it a shot since I have been loving my PL series II stuff so much. It sounds great! It sounds even better when I run the Model 1000 dynamic range expander along with it. The sonic holography feature makes for some very cool effects (especially after a few margaritas ) but I've noticed that it accelerates listener fatigue a bit more.
One huge difference I have noticed between the C-1 and my newly recapped Model 2000 preamp is how much LESS noise the C-1 has. I'm wondering if there is still something that needs to be fixed in the 2000 or if it's just the nature of the beast. Also, the C-1 has a TON of 4136s inside it, which would be quite the undertaking to swap out.
Do any of you have experience working with these guys? I read some stuff about the "BillD" mods, but I haven't looked too much into it yet.
