Sansui vs. Restraint.... which will win?

In my area there is a Sansui C-2102 & B-2102 pre-power amp combo available. Supposedly the set is 100% working and clean with no scratches or crazy blemishes. Pics look okay, the usual black-faced gear that can make smudges and fingerprints look worse than they really are. Seller is 2nd owner, he bought last year from former military guy.

Anyway, I'm getting by just fine without these, but I can pick them up for a very fair $300 and about 1/2 tank of gas and 3 hours of my time...

The pre amp is cool because it fully supports 3 sets of In/outs for tape decks and the bass/treble filter controls have additional variable controls that allow you to control hz frequency for those adjustments. Sansui called it "parametric equalization."

Here's my dilemma. I had a pair of these back in 88 when I was in the service in Germany, but had to swap/sell them to fund BMW engine repair. I was given an R-9 Yammy (one of the ones with black gate caps) and a fair amount of cash for the Sansui by a good friend who had massive Cerwin Vega speakers that the R-9 couldn't adequately push. The 120wpc Yamaha turned out to be a very good fit for my JBLs, so I went ahead with the deal and fixed my car. That's how I ended up engaged in a two decade love affair with Yamaha amps and receivers, especially the ones with variable loudness control and black gate caps...

Anyway, despite the affinity I developed for Yamaha amps as a result of that transaction, a part of me always regretted letting the Sansui kit go. But, the deal got me out of a bind and back on the road quickly, and still left me with great sound. Plus, the Yamaha had a remote, the Sansui didn't.

This deal is about scratching an itch that, quite frankly, might not really "need" to be scratched... and having just spent a ton of money on a new roof for the house, funds are tight... but I'm still sitting here thinking I need to find a way to make this purchase happen.

Please talk me into this.... or out of it.... whichever side of the fence you fall...

I'll play the devils advocate - scratch!!

Because you posted means you don't want to walk away. It's not like you're unfamiliar with the equipment and apparently like it.

It is a good price, but I say pass. You owned a set once and parted with it, so now you want a set again?

I owned a set of these once and I didn't think they were great either. although I did use three of those amps for my earliest surround sound tv system. :toothy5:

And yes of course it is always fun to relive past equipment.

I am in the Yes camp, John.

#1 reason is: You know the history of the Sansui equipment with only two owners.
#2: You know how well you liked both in the past.
#3: The buying price is likely about half of what such equipment would likely sell for in today's market.
#4: I assume you don't own the BMW anymore, so you're less likely to sell the Sansui pair again.

Thanks for trying to be a solid voice of reason, Web..., but I think I'm going to end up following everyone else's advice. Nando's list is tough to argue with...

If I get them and find out the memory of them was overinflated, then I can flip them without risk of loss...

I will follow up with the guy tomorrow and see if I can make this happen.

Yep it is like a person single handedly trying to hold a freight train from going down a steep grade after the brakes have failed. :toothy5:

I am hoping when you contact the guy he will say it was a mistake and he has the Sansui C-2301 & B-2301. So sorry I'll take $100 off the price for the mixup. :toothy5:
