Hello, all- This is Mark posting from South Carolina. I heard from someone that there were a lot of Phase Linear fans here, it was suggested that I jump into the stew.

I just finished two of the three major White Oak Audio upgrades to a 400 series two, and I'm still amazed at the performance.

Just wanted to poke my face in here and give a post-hallowe'en BOO!

Vellcome to Feeneex! So what are your PL's powering? Curious audio nuts want to know...
Well, I have to admit to everyone that I'm a low- budget audiophile, so my equipment may be a bit laughable...

Feeding into the PL is a Pioneer PL-L1000 with Ortofon Super OM30, another table is the Rek-O-Kut CVS 16, and believe it or not, I also have a Glaser-Steers GS77 from the late '60s for when I wanna put on a stack of 45s. Don't have a CD player and don't want one, don't want a tuner, either- but sometimes I do connect an iPod.

I have a 3000 Series Two preamp that doesn't work at present, thinking hard about the Carver 4000T. The Carver is essentially the PL 4000 which seems to be plagued by weak solder joints in the motherboard/daughtercard connections, so I wonder if the Carver inherited the same flaw (fishing for suggestions and wisdom here...).

Since the PL 3000 doesn't work, I'm using the front end of a Marantz PM8004, feeding it into the PL400. Dissatisfaction with the Marantz led me to get the PL. The Marantz was billed as a "high current" amp, just don't see it, and since I'm vinyl-centric I'm also disappointed with the mushy sounding phono stage.

On the output end of the PL400 is a pair of ADS L1290 that I bought back in the mid '80s. Still sound good, but a bit on the "bright" side (recap the crossovers?).

PLEASE NOTE:
Posted links to the WOPL BUILD forum, the videos actually belong there instead of here. I don't see a way of deleting this post.

Pictures? I have 30 pictures per second on the upgrades, multiplied at 100words/picture x playing time, I guess there are LOADS of pictures...

The Watts Abundant output relay circuit: http://youtu.be/sww80AeEZw4

The WOA driver card, revision D: http://youtu.be/yC48YxVXXUY

The WOA capacitor upgrade: http://youtu.be/hvcA8OXPmmM

If it's porn for you, be aware that the driver card video is about 43 minutes long. Hopefully worthy of the post-coital nicotine dose...

You have no reason to feel low-budget on your vinyl rigs, and I never even heard of a Glaser-Steers GS77 - where were they made?

In regards to your preamp problems, I have come to prefer gear with a minimum of connections and contacts. My main amp, for instance, is a very minimalist Arcam Delta 60, and everything is on one board with all soldered connections. It has a great phono section too, as do most British amps, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Glaser-Steers were made in New Jersey, approximate dates from 1957 - 1965 (hard to find information on this...). They were used by many console stereo systems such as Philco, Stromberg-Carlson, and General Electric- who bought out the company and ruined it. At one point I had a collection of seven (yes, there is a following on these things!) and have sold or given away all but one.

The GS77 will not revolve the platter unless a record has been detected by the mechanism- many people don't understand how this works and think they are broken. There is also an additional detent on the speed control that will change the speed to 33 1/3 for 10" and 12" discs and 45 for 7" discs. My YouTube user name is Mark5W8Comer, there's a few videos there with the thing in action.

The Pioneer PL-L1000 was an eBay STEAL for $92! Needed some very minor repairs, is nearly flawless- the drop-down point sometimes hits the edge of the record and falls off, but I haven't figured out how to change it.

Welcome Mark. I have a non-working PL-L1000 stashed away in a closet. I am half-heartedly making inquiries into getting it repaired. What is your impression of of the PL-L1000?
