I'll bet the PL pre did sound better. I'm just trying to help you figure this out. I just don't see it being your room. I will be around tomorrow if you want to brainstorm, plus I want to hear them MORE...I miss em. You got some fantastic speakers there..

Sutton I really don't know what else it could be. Other than Tim forgot to pour in that quart of bass magic in each one before they left...

The woofers are simply not broken in (run in) yet. They will get there. I know that is what it has to be. I was there listening today, and they sound great. Having built many subwoofers, I have seen this before. It is a matter of running the crap out of them for about a month. Then they will "wake up" and scare the living crap out of you.

Moby-"Play" track 4, Shpongle.."Tales of the Inexpressible" track 2, The Crystal Method.."Vegas" track 4...

At or near Mach 7 will loosen em up.......on a 700..... allow for 15 minutes of voice coil cooling between songs.....

Good Luck young Hillwalker.......and may the bass be with you!!

See, that's totally opposite on my end.....the bass is phenomenal, and I don't think the ROOM has as much to do with that as other speakers.....as far as I know " a tough room" just requires a wee bit more volume.....

BUT!!!! In light of this conundrum I shall consult a man that owns 3 pairs of these beauties.....TBC...

From my past experiences on redoing the crossovers on my SDA's the same phenomenon you describe is exactly what I heard when I redid the crossovers. Give them some time to break in. You should notice an improvement in the 500hr range. YMMV I have even heard of 1000 hrs to be completely broken in. If you can don't turn them off if you want a sooner break-in period.:occasion5:

I have concluded an hour long phone call withg Stephen Evans, my bud in Phoenix and said owner of 3 pairs of K's.

Some quick answers.....the woofs do sound better as time goes on......that time varies according to the quantity and rate of elkectrons fed to said woofs....

The room......Kev, Google the "golden ratio" it was a pet peeve of PWK for speaker placement. The K's are not perfect , because they are a compromise like any speaker system...BUT.....if you like horns they are the closest answer to perfect as I've heard and Stephen also when certain condfitions are met. Having 2 corners for the cabs at the long side of a rectangular room is preferable. Having walls made of very stiff material is essential to transmitting the bass energy out of the cabs, around the corner and into the room. Having no discontinuities (doorways, windows, etc) HELPS , but does not kill the bass response.
My room is 12'6" X 25' 3" with 8 ft ceilings. I have one door opening opposite the speaker wall. The wall opposite the speaker wall and one short wall are 2 X 4 stick with 5/8 sheetrock. The other 3 are cement firred out and sheetrocked. The K's bass response , Stephen says are down 3db at 30 hz, I would love to measure mine cause my ears dispute that....anyway......the bass from a K is tight and fast, as it is in a live performanmce. Every sub I've heard is flabby , mushy, whatever term you want to use. Run your sub the same time you run our K's then flip the sub switch off and tell me what you notice...
On Tim's Soni's during track 4 on Moby's "Play" album the bass is almost too much for the Soni's, those deep , distinctive bass notes almost smear, or BLEND together, The K's are a long ways from it, and a sub will do it,(the ones I've heard do)..that is what sets the K's apart. It's not that they'll GO LOW, but that they go low and still retain their RESOLUTION....that was the genius of Paul's design. Some of what you think you are missing MAY be that lack of smearing....some may be your room.

Electrons as the beloved Larrt puts it are PFM, (pure fucking magic) ya can't see em, but ya know they're there, and they are unpredictable little bastards....gotta love em.

You say the highs and mids are missing nothing......well they are they're missing some bass to go along with them and that my friend was the last thing I thought I would hear from you when you described em...

I will make you a proposal Kev....if you get them in a rectangular room , and you can put them on the long wall, and you still are not flabbergasted, I will buy them back AND PAY shipping cause I don't want you to be less than thrilled with them. Now don't get all defensive and prattle about this or that, this is from one friend to another, if you are not TOTALLY happy with em no problem I'll take em back.....I mean that. And it won't be a hardship on me. I would keep them only long enough to see if there was something amiss and they would be going back out as soon as I knew there wasn't or fixed the problem. BUT...before that happens we have some patience and some placement to try. I still believe in my heart you'll get em right and love em like I do, I saw your face when mine hit their stride when you were in THE CHAIR.....

It's only a matter of time, and playing them in. The sub he has is no ordinary sub, though. It is a Lambda Acoustics 15" driver, handmade by Nick McKinney in Florida, and is a true brute. The enclosure is double 3/4" MDF and 3/4" Ply......and braced internally with 2"X4" studs..it is a tuned box, and is not flabby at all. Not your ordinary sub. That being said, Kevin and I have built many speakers, and know that break-in time in imperative to get the driver to really perform. and I know the K's will come to life and will be scary good...

His room is awesome too. A BIG rectangular space.....perfect ..only thing he is missing is .....well nothing..

I want a pair of K's damn it.

Damn !!! I went to bed to early !!!! About 10 Or before I think... LOL...Now I got so much to say I don't know where to start !! Nav !!! You probally said it all in that little statement !!! Lee... Thank you for making that call !!! That was some good stuff there !! Like I told Sutton yesterday,,, I have been reading for three days ! One dude said he had a pair in three different houses.. And every time he moved his bass changed !!! One of the places he said he had no bass !!! Other two the bass was unreal.... By no means has the thought ever crossed my mind that I might part with these monsters !!!!! I've only wanted a pair for 30 some years !!!!!!!!!! 11th grade i believe it was... I'd say the day is close when I turn them on and they knock me right out the door !!!! I guess I just expected to turn them on and they sound like yours Lee... Right off the bat !!!! Hell... I've still got a living room upstairs that is all carpet. I might just take them up there one day and see what that does... Anyway..... It's way to early to be judging them... Another thing.... Most people would walk in my living room and ask me if I had lost my mind.... I AM BEING SO PICKY when I say the bass isnt right... I mean hell... They shake them damn couch !!!! The sound and quality of sound is so good in there that Sutton and I took a pair of 2000 dollar a pair Paradigm studio monitors out of there and parked them in my garage... Lol... I moved the Line arrays to the rear !!!! So... I am very very happy with the K's.... Next thing is to build me a little wall to complete a corner and then put the 700 on them and Play away !!!!!!!!!!!
