I'd mentioned in another thread that I picked up a Yamaha KX-930 last Thursday evening - wound up paying $20 for it. The cosmetics are pristine and it came with a working remote, a demagnetizer, two NOS tapes and he threw in a working Walkman. All of this in the original box.

The quick and short version of the story. This was a Craigslist item that came up recently and I was looking for a decent deck to mess around with and get back into recording. When I showed up at the sellers home he had the deck out and had exercised some of the functions using an unrecorded tape. He did the same when I showed up and all was working well. I wanted to verify that playback worked and check out some of the other deck functions and I had a tape in my car so I retrieved it. We inserted it into the deck and suddenly the deck stopped working - or should I say worked marginally. Playback did not work at all and we tried FF and RW - the tape moved about ten counts in either direction and just stopped. We went back to the sellers tape with the same results in FF and RW. After dicking with it for a bit longer the seller said "Shit" but he still wanted to get rid of the machine as he had not used it in years.

My thoughts about the failure were either a logic problem and that could get ugly or a belt issue which made more sense as I could still see the display indicating the mode that the deck was in while we were trying to get it working. Of course a motor failure was lingering in the back of my mind but it sounded ok during the initial test so I felt the probability of that was small. I figured that giving him 20 bucks and purchasing a belt kit could be an ok investment. So here we are. I neglected to get a shot of the unit before opening it up but here's the sellers photo of it.

Even with a belt issue, $20 for a 930 is a real good deal - 20 to 22K on metal is definitely nothing to sneeze at! Hopefully that's what does it for you. If you need a motor I might be able to cannibalize one of 20+ decks (geeesh.. don't tell TLC.. )

Yeah - the specs on this guy are real nice. My beer budget Technics RS-676 topped out at 13 kHz so I'm not real keen on getting that one back in operation anytime soon. Thanks for the offer - hopefully the belts and tires will make this dude sing again. I won't tell anyone either. :silent:

I pulled the cassette mechanism from the chassis to inspect it and found a very loose belt and another one that appears to be broken. The first photo is the bottom of the record and playback heads. The second and third are an attempt to show the condition of said heads and the last kinda shows one of the belts - this one is loose. Ozone must've had it's way with it.

Depending on when that unit was made, be expecting a motor failure. I replaced the motor in my KX-800 not long ago. For the cost of a new motor you may want to replace it while you have it apart doing the belts... Save some headache down the road.

Nice deck BTW.

The motor you need can be found here new.

EG530AD-2B is the motor you need.

Cant remember exactly how long it took to arrive, but it wasnt all that long. I ordered 2 when I made my order so I have one in the future if needed. These motors also work in other decks. The Teac V-2020 being one of them.

I just purchased two of them - the last two they had in stock. 7.50 each - should be good insurance. Thanks for the info Ben.

It will be good to see your Yamaha back in order. Once it is ready to roll, let us know. We have plenty of members who like to record and exchange mix tapes. You might even hear some music you hadn't heard of before.

Thanks Nando - I was thinking after a little recording practice I'll be able to join in on one of the Traveling Tapes escapades.

I don't think I have ever missed being involved in a Travelling Tape since joining. It will be nice to have more members participating.

They go in and out of stock all the time. When my brothers 2020 motor went out, I had to buy one from Sam(Skywavebe). Bout a month after that the motor in my KX-800 went tits up as well. By that time they had quite a large stock again, which is why I ordered 2. Not to mention for the price, and the price of shipping, its hardly a noticeable difference in shipping costs to have a second one thrown in.

I may be wrong on this one, but I think these motors work in some Naks as well.

The motors came in last week and the belts should be in this week as they shipped today! I'll post with photos as stuff arrives. Any ideas for the pinch rollers in case they don't work out? I understand that when these dudes get hard it's a bad thing - contrary to what I've been told. Maybe that was related to something else? :confused2: :laughing9:

Pinch roller might have to be a rebuild. Terry's Rubber Rollers may be able to help you refurb the current one. Unless you can cannibalize another deck for one. Ive also heard of a solvent you can soak them in to help rejuvenate the rubber, that may only be a temporary fix though. I havent had any issue yet with the original pinch roller in my deck. I have read on TH that some guys have had issues though... possibly due to improper storage or just bad conditions in general.

Im sure that 930 will sing beautifully once you get her all put back together.
