Picked up some more goodies from the recycling market on friday. Its a ritual to go there and have a look each week, I always think I will find nothing, but am pleasantly surprised most times. Lately people have been chucking a lot of car cassette decks out, and I am very surprised how many of them are alpine brand with SCC/SCC II heads, very fine decks indeed, and a bargain at $3 a piece.
Many cd players have been turning up there which struggle to sell. I found this Yamaha CDC-775 "Pro-Bit" 5 CD changer for $5 and the only reason I jumped on it is because it is similar to my CDC-575 but with more features and the "Pro-Bit" logo got me thinking it was a higher end model. Some research proved that it was:
"Pro-Bit mimics the 20-bit resolution of professional recording. The higher bit rate produces less quantization noise during A/D conversion. The translator takes the 16-bit CD signal and adjusts it to more accurately reflect the signal of the recording process. The translated output goes to a 22-bit, 8X oversampling digital filter, a 22-bit to 18-bit noise shaper, and then to the S-Bit Plus DACs. This digital domain process delivers an audibly more natural sound."
I popped the top off it to make sure everything was ok underneath, all good, very cool looking unit:

Of course I have been Shpongling the crap out of this thing, I do notice a difference from the CDC-575. I don't know much about CD players but must say this is a nice unit and it sounds better than the 575, very happy with it. Individual track change buttons, peak scan, output level adjustment are a bonus.
