Who's got wood?

The amp's & preamps look so good with wood, that I'm surprised 90% of them I see for sale are naked.
I wonder what percentage of overall sales were without a wood case?
Does the case have a negative effect on the units by holding heat in?
Were salesmen instructed to push customers one way or another?
I've searched all over the forum & can't find good wood even mentioned?
Are there drawings on here somewhere so I can build some?

Wood is for toothpicks and legs.

Wood was scarce and expensive in Japan. Therefore a lot of the wood you saw was laminated with vinyl or plastic veneer. Receivers got the full sleeve wood treatment in the sixties and seventies, some brands had only 'sideburns' (side panels and vinyl covered tops. Brands like Kenwood liked metal tops by the mid seventies, JVC was somewhat stark by the middle 70s and by 1980 most traces of wood, fake or real were gone from their products.

A lot of Sansuis never had wood, they not only had optional cases but I think that most of theirs and Marantz's cases are left over from dead and parted sets. Certain cases fit certain series.

Wood cases went from sleeves in the 60s to lids in the early 70s and then part vinyl covered metal and sideburns. One hallmark of Radio Shack sets was the labeling of the case as genuine walnut...veneer. Wooden cases were pretty much gone as a symbol of prestige by 1982-84. Plastic and black were in. Home theater killed wood. Wood was not 'tech'.

I think the wood cases make them look nice however I don't currently have any of mine enclosed due to the problem of switching out cables.

Years ago I had a 700 series II that had Walnut sides that attched with the top and bottom plate screws. A metal top attched to the sides with a magnet. They looked nice but were somewhat of a pain. They came as an option from Phase Linear and I have never seen them offered on ebay or anywhere else since. They'd be fairly easy to make if you wanted. I never noticed them holding in heat but they probably did. The amp was fan cooled so it didn't really matter.

As far as I know, there is wood only in my speakers and shelves, and most of that is MDF. Well, wait, the rack that holds up the TV-associated system is nice wood.

The Phase Linear wood cabinets used on series 1 products were manufactured by Poth Manufacturing. The owner Phil Poth passed away a number of years ago. He described to Dean (the last Phase Linear factory service manager) his process for making them. Also, Phil had several patents using his CNC machines in his woodworking business.

The cabinets come up from time to time on ebay and go for approximately $100-$175 each for the 7" tall Phase Linear products.

Are you looking for some? If so, I have a couple I may be willing to sell.

Thank you for the info! I pretty much need an example to duplicate. I have a nice table saw, band saw, surface planer , moulder shaper,etc. And I live right in the heart of the Black Walnut capitol of the world. I also have a gunstock duplicator that could come in handy.

The one WOPLsnifter referenced on Ebay is as nice as I've seen. But I think I can do better & do a variety of trims & subtle style mods.

So..........I will sleep on it & most likely decide that what I need is one just good enough to check details I might miss looking at pictures. In other words Fugly might do just fine! Heh...heh

Just remembered I had this. It came off the 400 that Lee has, the one he showed you the faceplate of. I can measure it for dimension if you like but I'm not using or have any intent to. It's in pretty good shape.

Bubinga wood has always caught my eye, pricey but, lovely!!

Brad, I don't think any factory cabs hindered heat dissipation. If you make your own, leave openings where the metal case has them.
