What metal is used for open reels?

Do any of you folks know what type of aluminum/ metal is used for open reels? I assume it is aluminum or aluminum alloy. I wanted to have some empty reels anodized and the person providing the service asked if I knew what the reels were made from, specifically what grade of aluminum/ metal is used.
