Thanks for the welcome back. The trip to Italy was wonderful – my first time back since 82.
We spent a week in Rome and saw quite a lot but just touched the surface of what there is to see and do in Rome. I need to download some photos and share them. From Rome we traveled by high speed rail to Florence and picked up a rental car. If you have not driven in Italy it is quite the experience – I was concerned as it’s been 30 years since I last drove there but the driving style came back quickly. In the Florence area we stayed at a nice villa about 20 miles north of the city for a week. Florence has an abundance of unbelievable art work – the mind numbs after a few short hours of observing. We spent several days in the outskirts of Florence and saw a lot of the smaller towns and checked out some wine producing facilities – many are centuries old.
After Florence we drove to the western coast of Italy on the Ligurian Sea. We stayed at a small port town named Portovenere near the towns of Chinque Terre - a series of five coastal towns. These towns were a spectacular sight to see – even though two of the towns were damaged by flooding in October of last year.
We then drove to north eastern Italy and stayed at a beautiful farm house converted to accommodate visitors with eleven rooms available for rent. We stayed there for 11 days and visited small towns in the area and we were about an hour train ride away from Venice. Two of our grand children (ages three and six) now live in the area and so we spent as much time with them as possible.
Needless to say we had a great trip (too much wine and good food) but it’s always nice to be home. Back to reality soon as I have today off but I'm off to work tomorrow.
The food was tremendous! The Italians typically use freshly made pastas and bread - delicious - and the vegetables and fruit were garden grown. A food and wine connoisseurs delight. A good liter wine could be had at just a few dollars.
