Get one with at least a 10 amp rating, and they don't do inrush. I'd forget while had the 700 on the variac with it sitting on 100% and take out fuses.

I picked up a brand new Staco 10 amp,1.4KVA for "free" a couple months ago.

I don't recommend those for 2 reasons. First, with today's switchmode power supplles, you need bot isolation and a variac in one unit, or you will melt your expensive scope probes. Second, you need a current meter!
Look for used Sencore 1655 or even better, Heath IP-5220. You only need a 3 amp (375 KVA) to repair audio.

Yes, but when you want to fix mostly AA5's some of that eounds like a Kevlar condom to me.

With a Variac in series with DBT(dim bulb tester) you can limit VOLTAGE and CURRENT, a VERY good thing sometimes. Nakdoc, if I work on something with a SWPS, I'll be lost anyway.
