Well I bought a new set of driver tubes yesterday. So I started shopping for the power tubes today. I'm going with 6550s. The Winged Cs got a very good rating. 8 matched tubes are 400.00. So I have been reading all day. Not feeling 100% ; but I'll feel better I always do.

OH Lee I have been talking to Cary. They say it has to be the tubes making the noise. I'm going to check them and see if I can match them or find a problem.

Larry

PS The driver tubes are Tung Sols made in Russia. But are marked 6H9C. I got them for a song.

I'm currently in the market for a matched quad of 6550's. Tung sol reissues are fine by me. But winged c's for the price your paying seems inexpensive!

Sorry your not feeling good.

I have a few suggestions.

For NOS it's hard to be metal base GE 6550's

Newer production:

Penta Labs KT-88's

Re-issue Gold Lion KT-88's

would be a few I'd consider.

I am a big fan of the winged C EL34's but have not use their 6550's.

Go with the new KT-120 from Tung Sol if your amp can handle them. EXCELLENT power tube. Most powerful tube produced today, and one of the best sounding power tubes I have ever heard. Good reviews from about everybody who has ever used them. Probably about $175.00 per quad. Make sure they are matched by the seller. I have a good seller who will discount them.....he will also burn them in and match them for you. You can request the specs you want too!! Can't beat that.

Capt. Bob's Electronic Emporium.........is the guy...

Here is the info on the tube.

In September of 1950 Tung-Sol introduced the 5881, an uprated and industrial version of the 6L6GA with a 23.5 watt plate dissipation, opening the doors to the hi-fi movement of the 1950s. This rugged tube also found a home in the '59 Fender Bassman and servo amplifiers used in B-52 bombers. In 1955 Tung-Sol raised the bar of high fidelity with the introduction of the 35 watt 6550, which could deliver 100 watts with a pair in push-pull configuration. This tube was used in the Dynaco Mark III and Sunn amplifers.

New Sensor now announces the Tung-Sol KT120, which has a plate dissipation of 60 watts, making it the most powerful tube in the 6550/KT88/KT90 family. A pair of these tubes in push-pull configuration can deliver power levels of 150 or more watts. When used at the parameters found in existing 6550/KT88/KT90 circuits, the Tung-Sol KT120 is impervious to overload, delivering peak power with extreme reliability and long tube life. However, taking advantage of the higher current handling capacity of these tubes, a very unique and super powerful and stable amp can be designed using the Tung-Sol KT-120.

TECHNICAL NOTE: This is the most powerful audio power tube in current production. The glass envelope of this tube is 1/2" taller than other KT88 cousins to accommodate the larger internal plate structure and larger control grid cooling fins. The filament of this tube draws 1.7A to 1.95A .or .1 Amp to .35 Amp (100 to 350 ma) more current than a KT88 so check with your amp manufacturer to make sure your filament transformer will handle the increase in current (at .35A/tube and if you have a quad that is 1.4A total additional current draw with normal current of 1.6A/tube).

Tube specifications are at: www.newsensor.com/releases/KT120TungSol.pdf

Tubes are Platinum matched by our distributor and checked and rematched if necessary by our technicians.

To rich for me. I was around when Ian started getting them. He won't sell to me any way. LOL I think I'll try the winged Cs 1st. Or I may just change the pres 1st. Who knows. LOL I'm just shopping at the moment.

I would love to hear them. China knows HOW to make great stuff. Much like Japan a decade or so ago, and the USA 50 years ago. I'll bet they are GREAT. Looks like they may have taken economic considerations out of the equation and finally someone is making the best tube that can be made. I'd love to hear them..

I would have to rebias I'm sure. I'm not going to pay that much for a tube. Some Chinese things are good. I seen a lot of bogus tubes today that came from China. I haven't rolled the tubes yet in my Shanling or my GF.

No Shipping and every thing will cause it. I take your word for it. Might as well nip it in the bud before it is even an issue. I can test the tubes and I will.

There should be no noise. Did you just turn up the pre with no input? Well they are in their hands now. Will get my questions answered I hope. Just bought the 6922 tubes for the phono part of the pre. 1972 Jan Sylvanias. Not cheap for sure.

Rex do you think a good pick?

Jan Sylvie's are always good picks no matter the tube. The only issue with 6922/6DJ8's are they can be noisy. They are some of the best pre amp tubes out there when you find quiet ones. I have a stash here of all different varieties here (standard 6DJ8's, to PQ's to gold pins....) as My BBX use them.

The one Russian tubes are 6SN7 variants, correct?

I've been a big fan of metal base GE 6550's and have at least a quad of two around here. That being said some of the KT-88's may have better low end....

Yes to all questions. I picked the winged C power tubes because of the reputation. Yes I picked up the Russian tubes cheap. In a winged C the EL88s were a lot more.. If these tubes make noise I'm sure I will hear from Cary. When I sold the last Chinese amp. I sent all the tubes I rolled to the guy who bought it. Didn't think I would be doing tubes again. The rectifier tube for the pre is a RCA. Not that it matters.
